Car still rolls forward when in gear

Following my experience with the car rolling off the handbrake and crashing the following happened today.

Parked car on an average hill and turned off the engine. Put in to first gear with the clutch de-activated.

Handbrake off and the car moved slightly as it engaged with the first gear, as to be expected.

Then after about 10 seconds it moved forward very slightly and stopped, it did this about 6 times over a minute and moved about 8 inches.

How wierd is that. Put it into reverse and it did the same thing, how is this possible.

Put the handbrake on whenever you're not in the car.

I always do

, but as it once failed I was seeing what would happen if it failed again and it was in gear.

I always thought you incident was weird - when I park mine on a hill, when I take the handbrake off, it still won't roll off - I have to drive it away, against some braking resistance. I assumed it was some kind of extra safety, in case the handbrake comes of accidentally.

Shouldn't roll no matter which gear you put it in unless you are parking about 15 yards over the edge of Beachy Head.

That would concern me a little.

I am gonna find another hill and see if it will do it again, if it does will speak to BMW.

For the last 23 years I always thought that if it was in gear it was going nowhere.

Think about it man....it's obvious. If you speak to BMW about it make sure you don't do it on 1st april or they'll think you're havin a laugh.....

In-gear is just trying to turn the engine over using the cars weight. It will push the engine round slowly as compression leaks by the piston rings. Same in any manual car ever built.

Reverse is the lowest gear so its the hardest to turn the engine. 1st is similar.

Someone said 3rd, but thats even easier to roll away..

In reverse, rolling forward is turning the engine backwards BTW...

An auto-box in park physically locks the transmission, which is different to a manual.

Best advice when parked on a hill is to turn the front wheels towards the
kerb. Even if everything fails and the car rolls , the car will not roll back on an incline or forward on a decline as it will be stopped when the rear or front wheels hit the kerb.

Hope you get your car sorted.

Did this last night.

Miswah tiny little Opel thing, worried bout handbrake i asked her to test leaving it in gear and it did exactly same.
