Paint question**
Is there a difference between applying oem bmw paint on an existing painted than making it prime first then apply the oem paint? Is it a bad idea to layer another color of paint on oem bmw paint? I 've never came across this but now I might want to reuse some parts that I have right now on my next car. TIA

as said previously, it needs to be primed. Also, if you're taking it to a shop, why ask? the shop pros should be knowledgeable enough to know the answer.
If you're thinking of cheaping out by skipping the priming process, don't, and if the paint shop agrees to you not having to prime the parts for paint, then it's not a good shop after all.

Modern urethane paints cross-link when cured and as a result, the surface needs to be adequately scuffed or sanded before a new coat will adhere to it. Depending on the type of clearcoat, it *may* be possible to scuff, apply basecoat and then clear but the odds are definitely not in your favor. Most shops will sand down through the existing clearcoat, get into the basecoat a bit (which is extremely thin) and then apply a sanding primer. This is important because you typically need to wet-sand the area to avoid seeing the feathered edge of the old paint showing through. Once the sanding is finished, a basecoat goes on followed by the clear. It should also be noted that urethanes use isocyanates and without a positive-pressure respirator, you can suffer nervous system damage if you inhale them. A charcoal canister type mask does not block isocyanates. From a practical standpoint, the majority of the cost for what you need done is in the materials themselves. Skipping proper prep will save you a little but the durability will be severely compromised. Over time, with temperature changes, the bond will fail, resulting in clearcoat failure (which you see on older cars where the clear turns patchy and hazy). Hope that helps, Adnan |

You wont have to sell your parts, proper preparation by a good shop will do fine!
Check out my front Hartge lip install:

He is located in Montreal, Quebec, how much it costed him is really of no relevance to you. Best thing for you is to either post in the regional forum to find some reputable shops in the NY area and go to those shops to get several price quotes to compare.
And read his post "proper preparation by a good shop will do fine", yes the shop primed it.

There's nothing wrong with painting CF. Some people like the look. You'll probably see a bit of the weave though, so it won't be too smooth.

Ask your local area E90 community members references for good local shops and get a couple of quotes for what you would like to have done. Go with the one that you are more comfortable with. Cheers!
