Which F1 Car Is Better - '08 or '09 ?
I most definitely like the 2008 cars better, but the way the 2009 cars are designed makes the races much more exciting

Aside from the disproportionate front wings/rear wings the 09 cars look more elegant, imho

So the cars can double up as snow plows in the winter off season

Well they did remove all of the dozens of tiny areodynamic wings from 08, hence the increase in size of the front/rear wings to maintain the needed downforce. The adjustable front wing gives the driver realtime adjusments to make the car drive more to their liking! The biggest problem I see with the front wing is that it gets damaged way to easily. BTW, I like the look of the 09 better as well.

the purpose is to clean up "turbulant air" caused by all the wing add ons and the big rear wing....so cars can move closer together and overtake (better slip stream) without sacrificing aerodynamic efficiency....

If he could have only finished that race, he would've had the championship

And by the way the rear wing size is decreased not increased while the front wing is now wider.. So my question was: were they trying to increase front down force while decreasing rear down force? Won't that make the cars more prone to spining and oversteer all over the place? Was that the intent? If so that would explain why the diffusers are so important now |

Depends what you mean by "better"?
It's difficult to compare as the 08 and 09 cars are govened by completely different rules and regulations. In terms of looks, I think the 08 cars are better. In terms of excitment of racing, I think the 09 cars are better |

I answered your question. "Well they did remove all of the dozens of tiny areodynamic wings from 08, hence the increase in size of the front/rear wings to maintain the needed downforce" They outlawed all the winglets, turning vanes, chimneys etc. decreasing downforce...dramatically. To compensate, they lowered the front wing, made it wider and added ~6deg of adjustiblity. Oh and BTW the rear wing is taller and narrower. It's like E90SLAM said, "the purpose is to clean up "turbulant air" caused by all the wing add ons and the big rear wing....so cars can move closer together and overtake...." As far as the diffuser is concerned, I don't quite understand the impact really. They placed the diffuser further back. It's front edge is level with rather then ahead of the rear axle, it has also been made longer and higher. All of these changes actually reduce downforce. I don't understand. I also heard that some of the rule changes were meant to try and reduce tha astronomical spending and to 'level' the playing field.

Got it... But still I am trying to clarify something else...
We all understand the intent to clean up the air behind the cars to allow them to run closer together and overatake more easily, that explains the loss of all the silly winglets and the taller rear wing. Does not explain the narrower rear wing and the wider front wing which seem taken together that the intent was to create more downforce up front and less at the rear.. Am I missing something? As for the diffuser, it's all about volume and suction capability, remember these cars have flat bottoms.. so the only way to extract air from under the car is by using diffusers at the rear and what matters is the volume not the placement. |
