MTB riders: best bike roof rack?
Just purchased a Gary Fish mountain bike and I'm looking for a good roof rack. If I get the BMW base rack, I'll have to buy an attachment right?

..I would love an anwser to this as well... my Cervelo needs a home... my understanding is you buy the base "infrastructure" that screws into the four roof flaps and then buy adaptable parts for your specific item...
... i was considering the two bike roof rack system with the lift hinge..... ~Frost

go with Thule adaptors to fit your car, then get regular load bars, and pick a thule bike attachment.

I use the OEM moutain bike rack for my cannondale. Seems to work fine. Moves a little when going over rough terrain, but I've never worried.

You should definitely get the OEM bmw roof rack. I believe I paid like 200 bucks and it holds my specialized bike awesome. also, I think this is the best look for a bmw. Gluck

If you are only transporting the one bike I just take the front wheel off my MTB or Road bike and it fits in the back really easily with the seats down. Saves you having to buy and install roof racks.

I already had the bars, Bike Mounts and Ski Clamp from my TSX...so I only had to buy the 460 Podium Kit, and the e90 Fit kit... I picked it up from NA Motorsports

I've had a few GF, currently a HiFi Deluxe...
I've been thinking about a bike rack since I got the car but all this time I've been fine with just folding the seats down... Only time it sucks a little is when it's raining or been really muddy. Just bring a towel along and/or get the trunk rubber mat though and you'll be fine. During the week I ride right after work and having it locked in my car is the only way I could do that anyway. I guess you could lock it to an external carrier but I'm not taking the chance. And being stored in the car I drive like I normally would to/from the trails. If it were on the roof or a trunk mount I’m sure I’d take it a LITTLE slower just in case. |

I've had the BMW base system with two Thule fork mount racks for road bikes. Has worked perfectly for three years and will use them on my new E92 as well.

Yakima makes some great racks. I'd take a look into their roof racks definitely. Very secure, work well. If they can hold my 50 lb. bike without shaking it off, then they can hold any bike Thule is definitely something to look into, too. They're way up there in the quality category, too.
If you want to be daring, you can try fitting your bike into the trunk. It's possible to do - you'll need to do some disassembling though and you may want to protect your interior with some towels. I fit my downhill bike entirely into a Honda Civic before without damaging anything. I had to open up the seat hole, but it worked. |
