No ashtray/power outlet on March 09 335i's :(

We have our first BMW on order which was built last week and already we are dissappointed to see that BMW has switched up something on the car from what we thought we ordered.

Just a big open hole instead of a nice cover. Very domestic looking to me.

Wow that looks bad. It would've been nice to have had a tray for coins, but it's uncovered and I can't think of anything I would put in an uncovered tray except for my phone (Which I tend to put in the thigh support opening of my passenger seat).

The sunglasses holder still has the cover, IIRC?

If you look at the US configurator you will see an open space where the ashtray use to be.

I guess this is how my car will come since it is March production.

Frankly, I prefer this. I don't smoke and I don't like wires hanging around. I always charge my phone in the armrest and I am getting iDrive so I won't have an aftermarket NAV system. Plus, my radar detector will be hardwired.

When my phone isn't charging I am always looking for a place to put it. Now with this deeper bin, I can just put it in there.

Still would have been nice if it had a cover but that would probably reduce it's size judging by how the sunglasses holder looks smaller compared to this bin.

Check out BMW1986's car. Do any of you see that open storage compartment or am I seeing things. Sure looks like there is no cover there.

I wouldn't mind having that big storage tray on mine as a place to put my wallet, but I'd hate to lose the power outlet there since that's where my V1 is plugged into.

I don't have an outlet in my footwell. Maybe it comes with some package I don't have, on not on E92s, but my outlets are only in the ashtray and under the center armrest.

the footwell outlet replaces the outlet you lose as of March 09 production with the ashtray/lighter being gone

Wow that looks awful. Im sure you can just buy the sunglass holder with closing lid and retrofit.

This definitely looks a lot cheaper than having something with a closing lid. Does anyone know if the sunglass holder with the lid will fit? Is it the same dimensions as the ashtray/ 12v socket it replaced?

I really doubt they changed the entire center console trim. I think they just made a third style drawer. (ashtray, sunglasses, sunglassess w/o lid)

Its probably possible to buy the ashtray and reroute the plug into the drawer as well. Im sure tischer will know.

I just swapped my ashtray out for the covered sunglass tray.

To my knowledge, you cannot buy the wood or aluminum cover without purchasing the console insert around the shifter as well. I wonder if this will change for those wanting a 'smoking package' retrofit.

BMW saved a few bucks - woo hoo!

That honestly has to be one of the worst cost cutting changes Ive ever seen. Logic7 extra, alarm extra, oil cooler only on some, etc.......but to replace that lid? How much money could BMW possibly save by taking out that lid and moving the power outlet to a different spot?

Are you sure about that? Looking on Real OEM now and I don't see anything that makes me think those have to be purchased together.

I'm going to reserve judgment until I see it in person. If I don't like it I will get the sunglasses tray with cover.
