Why blank out the License plates?

I have seen many pictures of the beautiful cars on this site and most of them have the License Plates blanked out.

Why?

Do you think someone will note where live and try to jack your system?

Depending on the angle of the car, when you take flash photos of your car during strong daylight to "heat up" the colors, it can wash out the license plate because of it's reflective paint.

No. He's talking about people who intentionally blur it before they post their pics. I personally do just for safety reasons.

Yep, realize that. Just commenting that a number of people do it inadvertently. I never could figure out why it's done intentionally. What's the diff -on the net or parked on the street?

For instance. The other day I saw pictures from a Ferrari Festival in Burlington, Vermont. No license plates taken off or covered. It is now known the plates of a F40, F50, 430, 360, 355. If you have certain ties and can get address on these plates, one could start finding these cars, jacking them, etc. Basically websites and forums like these could be databases of license plate numbers for thieves to pursue. Try driving around and finding a F40 or F50. I guarantee 99.999% chance you would never see one parked at a residence, they are all in a garage. Now try searching some car forums and finding pictures of these cars with license plates. I would think your latter search would be much more successful as a thief..

Most people don't like giving away ANY personal information on the Web (car License plates included). With all the possible ways people can steal your information, I don't want to be giving any of it away.

And if you saw that car on the street or the cars at the festival, you would have the same license info.

Not if you removed the license plate. I would take off my personal plates and put on a plate with a ferrari logo for the duration of the festival..

I had commented about this once before somewhere, blanking the plate is dumb, it does not have any security reasoning behind it. Its a peice of mind for the poster.
The thing is that more people(that you would not want to have your info) see your car and plate on the streets when you drive, then they do on here.
Also there is not much that a person can do with your license plate number unless they have access to some national computer data base. In that case they really dont need your plate anyway.
The info that can be abtained from your plate is the car info and owner info, so I guess someone can find out where you live, but they dont need to see your plate on the internet to do that.

Who cares, I do it cuz it makes me feel better. I certainly do not want to make it easy for anyone to get info on me. I cannot stop you if you really wanted to track me down, but at least, I am not going to hand feed you.

They can get your VIN number... and with that VIN number they can go to the dealer and get a key for your car.

That's why I put a piece of paper covering my VIN on my dash. I had my last car stolen... I called up my dealer's parts dept pretending that I lost my key and asking for a new one: "Oh, no prob, give me your VIN number and we'll order a new one." No asking my name, id, nothing.

Because you can get where someone lives (in certain states) by their plate number.

if somebody sees your plates here and gets an idea that you have a lot of expensive accessories in your car they could just break your windows and grab whatever you have.

say.. this guy wont be back here until this time coz he works there.... lets ..... his car.

who knows? if they can pry your xenons out of your car imagine what else they could do.

it doesnt hurt to be a little vigilant.

Did you also know that your driver license is public info? I can view your driver license online if I wanted too. Don't believe me, check this out (you can blame homeland security for this). Don't say I did not warn ya.
