328i auto transmission
I read in the recent MotorTrend magazine that the 328i will get a six speed automatic made by GM while the 335i will get the sophisticated German made ZF six speed auto. Sad news for those wanting the 328i with automatic.

The GM tranny will be tuned to BMW's specifications. Early E46's had GM's also. More importantly is ignoring the lifetime fluid specs and BMW's with autos are no fun anyhow

As an aside, the GM transmissions BMW uses are manufactured in Austria.

The 328i tranny is same as 325i tranny. So it means the current 325i has the GM tranny. Possibly even the 330i has the GM one.

hey, I'm not knocking on Lexus, I'm just saying that Toyota builds pretty sweet cars that are on-par with Lexus, it's not ignorance, it's simple economics, you do know that they share many parts between Lexus and Toyota, right?
Maybe the leather and the plastics used in Lexus is way better, but the basic engine/transmission/platform is the same. So yes, if you like your premium leather, get the Lexus, but if you're looking for the reliability of their mechanicals, as you said "get Lexus for their great auto transmission", Toyota's got the same transmission as the Lexus. GM Tranny's used in the E46 were built in France.
MY'04 had a rash of failing tranny's on NEW E46's. BMW replaced the tranny's with new/rebuilt on a customer complaint basis. Now there are reports of tranny's beginning to fail which have of 50k miles. BMW has since defined their "lifetime fluid" claim as meaning 100k miles. |
