2016 CAFE standards
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/18/r...ards-tomorrow/
The announcement comes out tomorrow. The key points of the autoblog story (take with a grain of salt): Fleet averages for cars will move from 27.5mpg to 42mpg. Fleet averages for light trucks will move from 24mpg to 26mpg. The NYT story is claiming 35mpg combined average. Update: Some sites are now claiming the correct figures at 39mpg for cars and 30mpg for trucks. Last edited by lib; 05-19-2009 at 07:17 PM.. |

Nice! Thanks to the shell game created by mandating the number of small cars automakers have to sell in relationship to how many big cars this should drive the cost of cars with good mileage throught he floor. Its just too bad there won't be anywhere near as many companies making cars anymore because they will have to either be unprofitable, have lots filled with cars no one wants or pay so much in gov't penalties they'll have to throw in the towel. If only Obama and congress could finally work up the balls to raise gas taxes or completely ban vehicles that get less than 35mpg then we would actually see something positive for pollution reduction and the economic health of our car companies. Or I guess the value of older cars would just shoot through the roof and the auto companies could focus on making parts to keep all the old desireable cars running.

This will just force models onto the road that are not ready for prime time from an engineering AND marketing/sales standpoint. |

If the products suck, no one will buy them. As an enthusiast, this sucks, but as someone concerned about our dependence on oil, this is a great move.

what they have to do, to pass particle emission standards makes the crap from the 70's and 80's look simple

Wow good thing the gubment is still pushing corn as the answer as well. Seeing as how it puts your mileage in the shitter, destroys the car, raises food prices, is only 5-26% renewable, and creates shit tons of pollution to create.... Jerking off the American public with one hand, and shoving BS down our throats with the other....

Raise gas taxes by 5 bucks. See how many gas guzzlers are sold then. Basically, europe's method will work better then mandating cafe averages.
As an automotive enthusiast, the whole thing is depressing. |

in reality this isn't going to change much about cars. i'm sure even a pickup truck going 55 in the right lane will already get 25mpg. the problem is when heavy footed jackasses are going 80 in their 2+ ton pickups, their mileage drops to about 5mpg. the real solution to reduce emissions, which will never happen because its in the governments interest to keep the emissions high, is to heavily mandate the size and weight of cars, and completely obliterate the idea of the luxury SUV, with some dumbass soccer mom on her cell phone driving a sequioa or escalade around with no cargo or passengers. if you use your pickup for landscaping, construction, work, whatever, fine. the problem is that 99.99999% of drivers of SUVs and pickups never use them for what they are designed to do and simply want something big. fine with me, i'll continue to barely press my gas pedal and watch as all the SUV's become specs in my rearview. |

Thanks for the reply lyndon. That's what I was thinking as well but I was not sure. I wonder where BMW stands with the product line up that they have currently? The 335d certainly helps it's rated at what 36mpg highway?
