Question depreciation due to mileage

Guys, do putting high mileages on a car have a huge impact on depreciation or does the value of a car comes down mostly due to the year and condition of the car?

miles can depreciate a car big time, because a car with less miles is going to be more desired, and someone will pay more for it.

Both

I also agree with what Ryan stated. How much more one will pay is questionable though.

Goto KBB.com and play around with their used car calculator. Select a make and model and play around with the mileage setting. This will tell you exactly how much of a difference mileage makes. Year and mileage both affect resale price, but this will give you an idea of how much on each.

On high end cars, mileage is huge!! It's a big deal on a 3er, but it's even bigger on something like a 6er or 7er. Your car will drop in value based on the age, but will freefall if you have excessive mileage.

It's interesting to observe that many cars like BMWs tend to be priced based on mileage moreso than age. Assuming that they are the same bodystyle, BMWs of different age tend to have similar values when they have similar mileage. A 2002, 2003 and 2004 325i all with 30k miles all tend to be pretty close in their actual value. The mileage is of bigger concern than the age.

KBB told me 30k mile difference was only $500.
My friend at a dealership also complains about how mileage really doesn't save you alot of $$$$.

This is a good question. I really want to find out also.

KBB mileage adjustments are BS... I'm in the used car business, and I buy alot of cars. Mileage is a big deal, and we're talking about a difference in thousands of dollars, not hundreds. Or, to look at it from a different point of view, it is a few hundred dollars for every thousand miles you are off from the average.

I'm curious for the data on mileage vs resale value for our car as well. Someone with more information plz post it.

Regardless though, I'm going to continue putting lots of miles on my car. So far it's at 17k+ miles and every mile has been a pure joy. The way I look at it, why save the miles for the next owner? Enjoy your car to the fullest!
