"A Company of Ideas" is pathetic.
When I was a creative director at JWT (the agency of record for Ford vehicles & trucks), there were serious thoughts of dropping "Build Ford Tough". But, the thing that kept it around was the fact that they built brand equity in a tagline like that for years and its stuck. The Ultimate Driving Machine has the same equity. You drop that and you're left with a "company trying to come up with an idea for a tagline"... The Ultimate Driving Machine is the Real Thing, so BMW! Just Do It! Where's the Beef? Lemme tell ya. Ya stick with what works. I Guarantee It! |

It won't matter if BMW drop the slogan ultimate driving machine as long as the car perform and reliable that counts.

Please don't flame....
May be BMW's new slogan of "A Company of Ideas" fit what they're trying to do. Afterall, BMW's been headed away from performance and more towards luxury for quit some time now. Their cars get heavier and more luxurious with the newer models. BMW definitely aren't built like they used to. Instead of engineering and manufacturing cars that are simple in design and durable, they're engineering/manufacturing cars that are loaded with technological "break throughs" that in my opinion don't necessarily contribute to the sporting nature of the "Ultimate Driving Machine". But there aren't any other manufacturers that engineer/manufacture RWD cars in 6 or 8 cylinders and come with a manual.

BMW truly is a company of ideas. see. (they didnt say good ideas though)
imagine our ads. i have another strange feeling that other companies will make fun of BMW thru their ads. the ads really are not the main concern but cant help but wonder. no more cool ads.

New BMW ads kinda suck! "We never let ideas down, here at BMW we cherish them". Thats the new slogan in full implementation I guess. U know who has amazing advertising now, Volkswagen.

"A company of ideas" could be toilet paper. It looks like we bought the last of the "Ultimate Driving Machings."

The company learned from research (refer to the previous WSJ article) that people who can afford BMWs did not consider BMW because of various reasons. So they decided to try a different way of advertising to increase their customer demographic. Companies do it all the time, some work, some don't. If they don't they will go back to their old slogans.

This has the makings of the same outcome as when Nike changed their tag line. I think we all remember a time when Nike's slogan was "I Can" instead of "Just Do It." It was such a blunder that they went back to "Just Do It." I have a feeling BMW will be doing much of the same.

Well seeing that the "Ultimate Driving Machine" is an extremely pretentious tag for a car that is most certainly not...I don't see a problem dropping it, however I like "sheer driving pleasure" as that is absolutely spot on.
