Send This to Tom Purves - SLOGAN PROTEST!

Here's the letter I made guys. Just copy and paste to a Word doc, fill in your name at the bottom, make any personal changes you'd like and then mail it to the address at the top. Something is only going to happen if a bunch of us send this out. Results will be achieved by numbers! Let's do it!

Dear Mr. Purves:

Today I was informed of BMW’s decision to change your “The Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan of 31 years to “A Company of Ideas.” As a loyal BMW customer and utmost enthusiast, I have to say that I find the idea of changing the original slogan to be not only a betrayal to BMW’s roots, but a downright stupid move. Such a decision makes me wonder if this new slogan was even surveyed as the outcry from BMW enthusiasts is huge! A quick check of popular BMW enthusiast message boards such as E90post.com and Bimmerfect.com supports this claim.

Many feel the choice to change the slogan was based on an executive decision that will move BMW’s efforts more towards technology and comfort, and away from what a BMW means most to all of us devotees; the driving experience and the magic-like excitement and paramount thrill a BMW provides.

Don’t get me wrong, adding new technology and comforts is great, but please remember what this company is all about! And I say this on behalf of all BMW enthusiasts out there: bring back “The Ultimate Driving Machine!”

Sincerely,

Haha. Don't count on it. Maybe a nice letter back from his secretary. Other than that, don't hold your breathe or you'll die and never be able to drive a BMW again. At least not until next lifetime--which would mean at least another 16 years.

Don't waste your time.

'A Company of Ideas' is the theme for a marketing campaign and is not replacing 'The Ultimate Driving Machine' as the company's slogan; Rata87 mentioned this in the original thread.

It'd be the most stupid thing in the world if they actually change that slogan.

Well, since they aren't dropping the Ultimate Driving Machine tagline, I think that the letter is a waste of paper and bandwidth.

The problem with this letter is two fold - 1) bimmerfect is not a site and 2) one should never start a paragraph with a contraction.

The above post raises an interesting point. However, it also behooves me to advise you that the phrase 'two-fold' is hyphenated.

You might want to check Websters - two fold is not hyphenated. I appreciate the feedback but it beehooves one to know proper grammer first

I would be pleased to allow 'twofold' or 'two-fold' but not 'two fold'.

If it were not hypenated 'two fold' would be two distinct words and as a consequence would not be listed in Websters, or any other dictionary of repute.

What does Websters say about the word 'pedantic' ?

I would also mention that you should have included a comma between the words 'feedback' and 'but' in your last post.

Finally, it 'behooves' me to direct you here:

With all due respect, it's a slogan.. Who cares? I agree, it might be a stupid move, but to be honest a BMW (the physical car) is still a BMW and always will be a BMW. The cars they make will always be the same, what difference does it make what the slogan is? I didn't buy the car for the slogan, I bought it for how it drove.. Their motto could be could be horrendous, and it wouldn't have made any difference on my decision..

I'm just curious why this decision affects you that much that you decided to draft a letter?

And don't use contractions in formal writing..

I concur. I would like to start an official "Send Beer to Calm BMW Executive Down" fund. Any donations may be made through paypal, and I will have a refrigerated keg delivered to his door, and replaced as needed. Please send a donation and a preferred beer to deliver.

My contribution:

Every once in a while...

I like the new advertising campaign, with its target audience of free thinking intelligentsia. BMW needs to appeal to a broader market base, and Green-friendly, hi-tech products require a new tag.

That said, we all agree on the focus implied by "the ultimate driving machine".

Nice job with the language lessons; hopefully we all learn a few useful bits here.

Dear Tombo,

Please don't start building cars that are shit to drive.

Cheers big ears,

(insert your name here)

PS....can we have some free beer for BMW Exec - he is a bit worried about your new slogan and getting pissed will probably help.
