E90 windshield is s**t.

Got my second big rock chip in my window and my car is under 1 year old. And the funny thing is that i drive far away from other cars never tailgate or anything was driving around 30mph when i got the last one. My ex e46 got alot of stones in its windshield and never left a mark in the e90 everything leaves marks, even small rocks leave marks. Too bad the windshield has become worse in the new model. A new windshield without rainsensor costs around 300 dollars so its not that expensive, if there is something positive about the damn thing.

Wow! I didn't realize the windshield was a weak point. My E90 is also less than a year old and only has 5,000 miles on it and got hit in the windshield by a rock while traveling about 60 MPH. The rock left a 1/2 inch chip in the window and I had it repaired for $60 at a windshield repair shop. They injected a resin into the chip and smoothed it out. The damage looks a lot better, but is still visible. Fortunately, the chip is in the bottom left corner of the window, so it is out of my direct line of sight while driving. I considered buying a new windshield, but if the windshield is that bad, there is nothing that says that in a few more months, I wouldn't get another rock chip in it. Does anyone know of a higher quality replacement windshield and what it would cost?

I believe all windshields must meet the same standards. The only thing that changes is the angle at which the windshield is positioned. Maybe the E90's are more upright than say the E46/E36 and therefore more likely to chip.

That's cheap modern windshields for you. It's not like the old days is it?

are you sure it's not just the impact and size of the rock. I really depends on how fast the rock is coming at you. You might get a lot of rocks but no chip. But you can't really tell how fast the rock is coming or how big it actually is even though you try to stay far away. I've driven for 10 years and never had a chip. I drive close to the car ahead once in a while. My gf drives safely but the 1st month she got her car, I was in the passenger seat, it chipped and cracked the windsheild almost instantly. Big rocks is a factor i think.

I really wish they would do something about the windshields. I had mine replaced and a week after that I got another f@#king rock chip!! I am still mad about it...

I've also noticed this has been a frequent occurrence from personal experience and from the forum.

I've already had one chip repaired, which happended even before I received my plates. Then another tiny chip a few weeks ago. I've had 4 cars prior to the E90 and I've never had one rock chip in any of the windshields. Now 2 within 7 months of purchasing the car?!

IMO, I this it just depends on the angle of the rock hit the winshield, sometimes, is just pure luck, depends on the angle, size and shape of rocks, there is no tell what kind of damage it may do....

I have learned to live with it already... and replacing the winshield earlier than it needs is waste of $$ in my opinion.. since who knows the next thing you drive it, it may leave another one....

and funny thing, if you tailgate, the chips tend to appear on your bumper, the farther you drive behind a construction truck, the higher the rocks hit --> i.e. your winshield.

I personaly am almost certain windshields in general have become weaker/softer than before. My dads audi windshield had around 5-10 rock chips when it was 3 years old and finaly cracked and had to be changed. In no other car he has owned has he needed to change the windshield. When he called the dealer about needing a new one, the dealer said that windshield have become softer and worse in quality on new cars in general than before. Really i am not kidding. Therfore i also think bmw has gone the same route, cheaper windows equal worse quality, its all about saving a euro here and there. My 2cents.

I think we should all just take a chill pill and live with the perils involved with driving a vehicle these days.

Yes they are very cheap/weak. My 1996 subaru windshield has been hit over 10 years and has zero chunks/chips, in 10 years to see out an e90, you,ll have to hang your head out the side window to see to drive.

All the BMWs I had seemed to have softer windscreens than other cars. They seem more prone to those little nicks that show as white spots.

I have at least 4 of those small chips. At least none of them are in my direct line of sight.

I've just learned to avoid driving behing vehicles that do not have mud flaps if possible. I had to have my windshield replaced on my e46 and my e90 less than a month after I bought it. I definately think the BMW windshields are softer since I never had a crack or chip in any of my non BMW cars. It could be coincidence.

I've had mine just over a month, I've had two rocks hit my windshield, and both caused chips. So far, I'm batting .1000.
