Is The Deposit Refundable?
if you place a $500 deposit on a new car (ordered) and the car arrives at the dealer and you back out, is the $500 is still refundable at that point?
what if you put a $500 deposit and the dealer has to bring bring the car from another dealer. the car arrives at the dealer and you back out of the deal, still refundable? brief questions i need help with. thanks guys.

If you had to order the car, probably not. If they had to bring it from another dealer, yes. If ordered then your 500 will go towards freight / shipping etc.

I'm pretty sure the deposit is refundable if you order a new car. I don't think you are locked in until you sign the contract. But I'm not 100% sure.

I was told on an order, it is non-refundable, unless they got something very wrong on the order (ie, ordered Space Gray, received Alpine White, or severe damage to vehicle, etc).
My dealer just holds the check though - so if I choose to not put that money towards the purchase, I get it back - but only if I sign the contract. I was told this was because custom orders can have option combinations that are too hard for them to sell (apparently, 6MT in a 3 series fits this definition).

Dude, if you wrote them a check for the deposit just put a stop payment on the check. I am pretty sure they aren't going to take you to court over it!

When I ordered my car last month one of the documents I signed was a paper saying that I understood that deposits on special order vehicles were non-refundable.
I think there is a common sense factor too. Years ago I ordered a 330 in March for the next year's production (summer). Months went by and production for the new year started and they still couldn't commit to a specific build date. I pulled my deposit back and went to another dealer. They were out nothing, they never ordered anything and certainly weren't stuck with a car they didn't want. |

Yes, a 3 bedroom 2 bath cubicle w/ 2 car garage . . . .
Location is key - the area I'm in never inflated the real estate prices . . . in Long Island, for instance, my mortgage payment would get me a closet without a light bulb. . . .

Your deposit is refundable by California state law and unless you signed something stating that you relinquish your money to the dealer to cover any expenses that they incur bringing the car into stock for you.

As someone point out, most reputable dealer will return it to you. However some states have laws around this so they can not legally keep it anyway. I know in PA you can back out of any contract or sale within 3 business days, you can take the car home and return it 3 days later and they have to take it back no questions asked.

I ordered my new 2008 328i over the phone, internet and email and the build began. Then they asked for a $1000 deposit. I never sent it in. The car was being built at that time.
I tracked the car being built and shipped. They called to say that the car was in and come get it. No deposit given..I could walk away from car if they didn't agree to my price. All's well that ends well.
