In search of a good assault rifle.... for range shooting only

Hey guys, Im looking for a dependable, light weight, yet customizable assault rifle... I dont know much about rifles as I do handguns but I want to hit the range more often with a fun "toy".

Requirements
Can handle a lot of (cheap) rounds, like .223 or something
Lightweight
Decent price
Easy to customize, i.e add scopes, stocks, grips, etc

Please add pics too

Bushmaster AR,or go cheap and dependable with an AK. You can shoot anything through and AK with no issues, but AR's tend to be picky.

Any AR rifle will do. I would recommend a Colt, but if your looking for a cheap one, go with Bushmaster or DPMS.

I'll post a picture of my Colt setup later on if I can find my camera.

I noticed you said you wanted something cheap to shoot, .223/5.56 isn't nearly as cheap anymore as it used to be.

yeah ammo just isnt cheap anymore at all, if you can even find it... all my local shops have the lowest stock i have ever seen as far as ammunition is concerned. one guy told me people are buying cases of thousands instead of just 100 here or there... nuts.

Anyway, I just want something fun that isnt going to make me cry everytime i pull the trigger and here cash registers clinging in my mind haha

Yeah .223 is pretty expensive now. The best deal I found locally was 250 rounds for $140 out the door. That's Federal ammo which is pretty good. So i picked some up. Anywhere else wants an arm and a leg for .223 rounds...pretty stupid if you ask me.

You should look into getting a Grendel 6.5mm from Anderson Arms or another high quality manufacturer.

Nothing beats it. Look it up.

That's just for shooting birds. You can barely break through skin at 100 yards with a .22.
