New E90, Fuel Leak, 1/4 tank gone in 20mins, Lemon?
Not sure if this the right subforum to post but wonder if other owners around the world experienced this...
Picked up my new e90 320i (made in SA) today from the dealer and took it home. 4 hours later, I decided to fill up the tank (from the 1/4 complimentary fuel that they had already given me) Filled up the tank at the gas station, and there's a strong smell of petrol, I look down and there's gasoline literally pouring & dripping out from the bottom of the car. Took a risk, drove to the dealer. After 20mins, & at 3/4 tank, there isnt any more leaking. Car's with the dealer now and I want to ask if they can gimme a brand new car, because I strongly feel this 'lemon' is a huge safety risk to myself & possibly other road users if something happens... even if they do manage to repair the problem, there might be other problems, or worse residual petrol. I know 1 other user experienced this but i'm curious if any other users experienced this? what was their eventual outcome? and hope other users know about this ridiculous QC from BM... =( Last edited by Rev; 08-22-2006 at 09:00 PM.. |

That's interesting. I understand your concern, and since it is a brand new car, I'd probably feel the same way. I'm not a car sales guy, but I would think they could take the car back, and sell you another one.
On the flip side, I wouldn't assume that a leak means that your entire car is a lemon. Find out exactly what caused the leak. Maybe there was a defect in the tank's plug? |

thanks for the feedback guys...
hmm... I was thinking they can keep the car, do an autopsy on it, lemme know what went wrong and gimme a new one. I dont think that's an obnoxious request, the car's supposed to be new and I understand there's always minor problems with any new car, regardless if its bmw or cherry qq, but this is crazy.... All i know right now is that the leak is from the top since the leak stops at 3/4 tank. ps: man, I love the car (despite the jarring runflats) & where i live is a pretty small country, 1/4 tank can go last awhile =) Last edited by Rev; 08-24-2006 at 08:42 PM.. |

BMW will probably take it in for service and if worst comes to worst, put in a completely new gas tank. They did that on my E46 before, but it does take a while. Took me like... 2 weeks. But atleast I got a 2006 Z4 as a loaner car. ;-)

Full tank on delivery? Guess that's a good way to inspect the car before delivery in my case hehe.

not sure if this thread will cause mass panic. (I doubt it) maybe this is the first isolated case but moderators are welcome to 'moderate' heh ps: they gave me a 523 in the meantime.... |

Hope things work out for you! Bummer that something happened right away. Give them a chance to fix it and see what happens.

thanks hornet... not sure what thavash's cause of the problem was since he didnt give closure on his problem... while his car was stuck there for 2 weeks.
so far, the dealer here has found the problem only after 1.5 days. Under the rear seats, 1 of 2 gaskets that has the fuel level sensor wasnt fitted/tightened properly. So when it's pumped full of gas (not overpumped), 1/4 of the tank will leak out. 1 way to check it is to provide a full tank of gas on delivery, but that's only 1 way & isn't exhaustive. I cant disclose what my discussed terms/arguments with the dealer were but all I can say is that i'm trying to force them to feedback this issue to the bmw factory so that it's taken seriously for all e90's... gawdamn.... |

what do you mean you cannot disclose? Don't you want to help ppl understand how BMW is fixing this problem and taking care of their customers? Are you under court order to not speak of this resolution. I agreed with you that this is a serious issue.

Thanks tx... I cant disclose because they are discussions between me & my dealer where I live. As for BMW's response, I'll let everyone know in a few days.
In the meantime, if friends/family are interested to buy a new e90, just make sure the dealer gives a full tank of gas on delivery and that they inspect the fuel system. |

I'm still blown away that they'd let you drive off with less then a full tank of gas... I've never seen a dealership deliver a vehicle without filling it up.

Rev, maybe the stealership knows about the problem that's why you weren't given a full tank?
Which part of Canada are you from?
