Nasty Virus. Any computer GURUS here?
I was cruising some sites and all of a sudden this fake virus scan thing pops up. I leave it alone and do not click it just in case it was a bogus close icon. Well, I bring up my Virus scan/anti-spyware and it starts detecting a bunch of stuff. All of a sudden the "blue screen of death" pops up and I restart.
I restart and my internet browser is not working, my anti-spyware/virus scan not working. I tried to re-start in safe mode but no go...I get the blue screen of death.. any ideas????? I'm using my laptop right now to message...

If you backed up your data regularly the easiest thing might be a fresh install of windows. Sometimes you can chase one of those viruses for hours and still not get every remnant out.
Try doing a restore if possible. You can also restore the boot and mbr(if XP) from the install discs. Then run a cleaner program like malwarebites or pandascan. |

If you do an install of windows without reformatting, you'll keep all the data not linked to your registry and leave the virus/infection static/dormant.

This is the most freaking malicous virus I have ever encountered. It basically disables the web browsers and uses it to transmit and receive data. I DL virus scanners on another computer, yanked out the lan cable from the computer, installed it via the usb stick, and scanned.
I am going to try and do a system restore but I feel that it will be to no avail. I nmay have to save my files and just reformat. I am also going to try and pull the hard drive, link it to another computer via usb, and scan it using the good computer's scanners. HOPEFULLY that will do it...

if you're that desperate, you can grab another hard drive for cheap, install an OS on it, and use your current HDD as a back up.....or if you want to skip all that, buy a hard drive enclosure for $20 and you can use that hard drive as an external one to back up/clean up all the data.

I got hit by it last December. There were a few ways to tame it, but it kept coming back. I ended up reinstalling XP.
Some sites had linked it to a .exe that appears in the C:/Windows/Google folder. I can't remember what it was called. But deleting that (you'll need FileAssassin), did help out short term. It always managed to come back though.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I am going to buy a 1tb HD and install that. I guess its time for an upgrade anyways. Its my GF's computer at our apartment. The computer at my parents house is the one I am going to use to scan it with. She currently has a 140gig haha...
