Some 335i engine tidbits from the Vishnu nerds

Hi guys,
Spent a good portion of the day digging inside the engine bay. A few things of interest.

1) The car doesn't have a MAF sensor. Instead it calculates load from 2 MAP sensors. One a few inches upstream of the throttle body and one in the intake manifold. The former actually being a T-MAP sensor (a MAP sensor which incorporates a temp sensor in one sensor body). Pretty neat stuff. I've read about this but have yet to see it any car first-hand.

2) Fuel rail pressure varies as a function of engine load. It can go as low as a few hundred psi to as high as 3000psi!

3) The crank trigger is still a 60-2 toothed wheel. They did not change over to the asymetric trigger configuration that is becoming popular lately for their multiple reference points (a plus when it comes to misfire diagnostics.)

More to come...

my only experience with MAP sensors was when converting to individual throttle bodies - . Saw them often on corolla's with individuals + MAP sensor.

Very interesting to see them on the 335i. Your input on any matter of the engine bay would be greatly appreciated here - i am sure of it. =)

thanks!

So how do they modulate the fuel pressure? Using a vacum hose to change the pressure regulator setting?

Shiv,

Didn't realize you were also on the E90 forum. I cross-posted some of your findings earlier this week in this thread:

Here is Shiv's whp dyno data from an E92 335:

The BMW work that we do isn't offical Vishnu business. It's just what i'm doing on the side. As such, I'm doing all the computer work it in my garage in Blackhawk. And all the test driving on 680 and Calaveras Canyon Rd

Shiv,
I was looking at that myself when I went to test drive the car, but I didn't see the one in the intake manifold, which is what threw me off. Good thing is that its not a MAF, it would give just a bit more headaches. With the two map sensors, can the former be compared to an AIT sensor? Such as the typical AEM setup, 3/5 GM map sensor and GM AIT sensor. Also with the direct injection and the larger scale in fuel pressure, is there any need for fuel upgrades (injectors, fuel pumps, fuel rail, fpr)?
Thanks.
