E91 320d UK MPG

We've done about 5K miles on our E91 320d now. I've never been satisfied with the mpg quoted by the onboard computer. At the last fill-up, we reset the counter and waited until the reserve indicator came on which was 480 miles.

So, fuel tank max is 63 litres = 13.858 UK gallons.

BMW UK just told me that the reserve indicator comes on between 3.5 - 5 litres (depending on driving style). So if we take 4 litres, that leaves 59 litres or 12.978 gallons.

480 miles / 12.978 gallons = 36.98 miles per gallon which is absolute crap. My old M3 could achieve that no problem with careful driving. Our E91 is mainly driven by the missus who drives gently, mostly through a few villages and onto dual-carriageways.

BMW told me the "combined" figure is 47.9 mpg. Looks like we're getting 10 less which seems like more than just chance. Either that or the quoted reserve is wrong. I've never had a BMW with a reserve light coming on at roughly 1 gallon before?

What are other 320d users getting ?

I have about 2300km on it and I'm getting an average of 7.2 litres. Note that I have a pretty sporty driving behaviour. I filled her up today and took it real easy and got an average of about 6.3 litres.

I'm on 6.5 l/100km now after 2000km's don't know what that is in mpg....
I know from experience that it will drop after some 10000km's. That's what happened to my 535d
My 535d avaraged 8,5 later on and 10,5 for the first 10000km

6.5 l/100km, is that with sporty driving or rather calm and relaxed ?

I get an average of 7.4 l/100kms
That's 70-80% city driving with a lot of hills.
On a long cruise then I get well over 1000kms on a full tank.
With my normal mostly city driving it's 750-850 kms on a tank.

When the car was new it was definitely sub-optimal (around 9 l/100kms).
After I passed 5000kms then I noticed the fuel consumption got better and better. I am now at almost 12,000kms.

I mainly drive on the motorway and return an average mpg of 47ish.

On a flat run at a steady 70 I've had it as high as 56 to 58 mpg!

My car has covered 3800 miles.

I think first of all you have to take accurate figures by brimming tank then brimming it again and see how many litres you have used and how many miles you have done. Convert the litres to gallons by dividing by 4.54. Divide the miles completed by number of gallons used to get mpg.You cant rely on when fuel light comes on. What is the obc reading? I find that mine is an auto and the obc generally shows around 47mpg and calculated averages around 44/45. I have usually done 450 miles when the guage is approaching the quarter mark. Car does a reasonable amount of cruising motorways and "a" roads although quite often fairly high speeds and regualr traffic hold ups. My car has only done 3500 miles and could get even better with a few miles on the clock.
You could also try doing a motorway and A road cruise and if you get late 40's to 50 mpg you can reckon its just your driving style not a car fault.
