AFE Intake Review
First Impressions:
When I opened the box, it was packed very well, and everything was bagged well, and in good shape. two stickers and a license plate frame is always a plus Installation: The installation was a little rough, luckily I'd put in intakes before, because they directions were horrendously brief. Once I knew what I was supposed to be doing with everything, install went pretty smooth. The worst part of the directions was where they say "reconnect to existing mounting points at these three locations" and there are only two circled... Sound/Performance: The sound is absolutely great, very deep. Performance wise, obviously there's no crazy HP gains, but the throttle response really is a lot better. Those of you that have 325's know how bad the throttle is, and the intake got rid of about 75% of that lag. Though this could be my imagination, the car seems to pull a good bit better through the mid range. No dyno numbers though, really didn't see the need to spend 150 to dyno a 400 dollar upgrade. Oh, and my gas mileage has gone up .3 mpg's since I put it in Great stuff AFE, would recommend this product to anyone, and if you have any install questions shoot me a message. No pictures, pretty sure everyone's seen one of these things, but if you need pictures of anything specific, i'll be more than glad to take them. |

Which AFE model did you go with? I am planning on doing an intake upgrade soon!

Thanks for the write up, Amigo. Its good to hear your comments. I think your write up has helped push me over the edge on purchasing it.
Couple quick questions: How is the fit and finish? I've seen the photos a million times (never in person), but in your opinion, does it look as good as the promo photos show? Does it seem to be as fully insulated to heat transmission as it appears?

there seems to be confusion on this, but I believe there only is one model, with the afe top heat shield, and sometimes called the "stage two".

I believe it does look as good, if not better than the promo photos show, I was very suprised by the quality of everything. The only thing I thought was cheap were the stickers To me it seems as insulated as possible, as it does need some room to breathe. The entire side facing the block is fully insulated, the only way you can even see the filter is to lean down a bit and look from about the same angle as the bulb ballasts. |

Most of the gain (throttle response and power) comes from getting rid of the carbon filter. The sound is pure AFE though...

Congrats on the Stage 2.
The Horsepower is there - their intake is definitely been tested on the dyno and truly delivers the performance. But the sound gotta agree is very intoxicating. Did you get the Oiled or the Dry Filter? |

BTW - my last post was sarcasm. No intake on the market will provide those types of gains advertised.
If the OP is happy, that's all that counts.

Tom im pretty sure those claims of 27 hp are for the turbo intake either way they are a little high. One thing to remember is crank hp will always be higher than whp(dyno).
A good intake should net around 5-10 whp |

i read on a review for the AFE for the E90 330i that the AFE intake gave 0.9 more WHP and 4.5Ft-LBS of torque, i shearched for like 20min trying to find that article but failed (its now bothering me that i couldnt find it)
but im not sure if they let the car adjust to the intake, its takes about 100 miles for the car to adjust to the new parts and so if the just bolted it on and did a dyno then not sure if the data is credible but i beleive them. i have the AFE and it pulls more but i wouldnt say there is too much gain in the power. |
