Not before 2008/2009 when the new diesel low sulfer standards kick in. Trucks have to comply by 07 and I believe that Cummings and others already do. Its going to be tough however because MB has been having trouble passing for 07 and they already comply with just about every other standard that is out there today. That is why some people have pulled their desiel engines for 07.

Even the EU is going to get tougher for 2010/2012.

In light of the Bluetec fiasco for MB (failed in the 5 states Cali etc) I would be surprised if they get here before the 2010 engines are out for Europe. From memory the 2010 Euro standards on particle emissions would make those engines pass here as well all 50 states.

The diesel being sold at the pump has recently switched to the low-sulfer version.

The suprise of BluTech not making all 50-states is prob a red-flag for BMW.

I wouldn't expect to see them anytime soon in the 3 series, but BMW has said that it expects to introduce diesels here in the next 2 years probably in the 5 series and X5. They are going to use the same technology as MB in their Bluetec system (urea injection) for 50 state approval. Low sulfur fuel goes on sale October 2006. Bluetec didn't fail in California. The technology works. MB and California failed to agree on what happens when the urea runs out and needs replacing. MB says it'll be replaced at oil changes and California wants the car to be disabled in some way (drastic horsepower reduction or completely non-startable) which will require an owner to replace immediately to regain full vehicle function. Once that detail is worked out expect to see diesels nationwide.

The reason that MB will not pass the standard is that the standard was changed for 07 from 06 and the MB passed in 06. I think the 5 stated everyone mentioned is not measured using an 06 standard which is really an 04 standard but the new 07. Thus the reason MB will wait until 08 to meet the 07 requirement.
By the way the reason they are failing is that the NO level is too high. I wish I could recall the exact numbers but something like 50 ppm to 5 ppm and diesels by their nature put out way more NO them CO2 thus the reason they are screwed for a while.
Man I for one wish BMW would get their diesels here. I have had diesel cars while living in Europe and my crappy Fiat 3 cylinder had a turbo and was as fast as a gas taking off. Built in cruise control meaning you drove it with your foot planeted on the floor averaging 140km straight and level, 160 down hill and 120 up hill all while getting 40 mpg...

Forget California and the other 4 states that don't want them (I know that they can't due to sales), but I want a 330DT in Canada.

Is it so hard to comprehend that wagon drivers want the same spec sheet to choose from as sedan drivers? Make all wagons special orders if you have to, but allow me to have a RWB wagon with a proper sport package and a diesel engine.

...everyone that doesn't want diesel here should drive one and see what they are missing...over 40mpg and better highway acceleration, that is what I want...0-60 times are for couch racing only
