equal treatment or racism?
A white Philadelphia police officer has been forced to do desk duty and cut his hair by his black superior after showing up for work with cornrows, traditionally a black hairdo. Thomas Strain, who has five years experience in his job, got taken to the inspector's office and was taken off the street on September 3rd, the day he got the cornrows in his hair.
Thomas Strain of Philadelphia's 35th District has declined to comment on the incident, but many of his colleagues are calling the action discriminatory. According to Philly.com, dozens of black police officers have cornrows. But Strain's superior Aaron Horne found the cornrows unprofessional. Police policy states that officers' hair has to be "clean, properly trimmed and combed", so that they are able to wear their hats "in a military manner", according to police spokesman Frank Vanore. Police policy does not ban hairstyles such as cornrows, mohawks or dreadlocks, but police officers are not allowed to dye their hair in unnatural colors. Vanore did not see Strain's cornrows, but speculated that they may prevented him from wearing his hat properly. |

Sounds like a professionalism matter to me.
Who the hell would take a white cop with cornrows seriously? I wouldn't even take a black cop with cornrows seriously....its a trend and fashion that lives amoung the young in the country. You rarely see full grown adults with that hairdo, ESPECIALLY professionals. I'd have all cops regardless of race cut that shit off. |

reverse racism is still racism. i hate that double standard. i don't understand how black people can say or do blatantly racist things towards white people but it's not a big deal for them, but if a white person says one thing that can even be remotely interpreted as racist, suddenly it's a hate crime.

Professionalism... period. Like stated I would not take a white officer with cornrows seriously. I'd probably laugh at him... but come on. having clean cut will lead you more respect.

People scream "RACISM!!" whenever two people of two races disagree about something. I realllllly don't think that this is racism What cop has cornrows, anyway? Never seen one before.

It wouldn't be racism if all cops were required to take off their cornrows but this issue is that there were black officers who had cornrows who weren't asked to remove them but a white officer was, which in my book is discrimination....

Not related to the topic:
I call some of my black friends "*****", they aren't offended because they are not anybody's slave anymore, those times are OVER. but racism on different level still does exist. Like african americans are STILL considered minorities in this country. |

Discriminatory Racism. If one guy can't have cornrows, then the rest of the guys shouldn't be able to have cornrows. REGARDLESS of "what you usually see on x race."

Who cares?
Even if they are a bit protective of themselves, you meet so few that it wouldn't matter. The bad natured and painfully rude attitude toward others just comes from centuries of being suppressed (regardless of whether the same attitudes apply today).
