Unhappy Steptronic Problem

I had my 3 series for approx 2 months now and have started to noticed that in the steptronic mode it upshifts on its own from M2 to M4 @ approx 2000 rpms. I contacted BMW and they plan to test it out but since its only intermittent, it may not happen while they test it. Has anyone else noticed this or had this problem?

I have had it upshift from 1-2, 2-3 but not 2-4.

I thought in M mode, it will never auto upshift but only auto downshift if car speed is below a minimum speed for that gear?

The problem I hate is, in M Mode, when I downshift frokm 4th to 3rd gear, the car does not reponse instantly to the downshift , the engine braking only comes about half a second later. During the half a second gap, the car feels like at the fifth gear instead of 3rd or 4th.

I think its always supposed to shift up or down if the revs are in danger of damaging the car, but I've never heard of upshifting from 2 to 4, that is unless you're speeding up so fast that it shifts from 2 to 3 and 3 to 4 so fast you can't even seeee!!!! I dunno, hope you can reproduce it for BMW and get your problems solved.

actually, I am still confused,

Only if you are in auto modes , namely S and C , then the tranny will shift for you. and then, how can you tell it shifts from 2 to 4 in S/C mode, it does not display the gear like in M mode ?

When you are talking about M mode, the car will only upshift by manual.
I never experienced it will upshift automtically
( perhaps I never rev the car high enough at M2 to experience that?)

Even on M mode, it will shift upward automatically when you rev it until the red line (until close to 7,000 rpm). This is the new steptronic in e90.

Yeh, but the OP is talking about 2000rpm, not redline.

In M mode, why it it changing up at 2000rpm?? If that is actually happening then there is a problem.

I have not experienced this problem with my step. Hope the dealer finds the intermittent problem.

I dun face this problem too. I have a strong feeling it could be the software problem.

I had the same problem with my e90 325i and it pissed me off.
Apparenttly I noticed the same thing with the Lexus IS 350 in manual/paddles mode.

I guess MANUAL mode is not really 100% manual. But I have no explanation, and neither does BMW, for why this is happening.

Get a manual tranny if you want to shift it yourself! Just kidding, I was just shocked I had yet to see a "step stinks" post yet, so I thought I would beat the peanut gallery to the punch.

Mine didn't upshift in around 2000rpm.

Did anyone notice the shift from 1st to 2nd is a bit rough??
I step on the gas paddle and upshift from 1st to 2nd at around 3500rpm (my feet is on the gas paddle the whole time), the shift isn't really smooth, is it just me???

I too never experienced automatic upshifts when redlining at M2. But usually I shift to M3 when it hits 6000+. Back to automatic upshifts, I don' think the car would do that. It would just cut the fuel to the engine to prevent damage instead of upshifting for you. However, I am not 100% sure.

the car dosent cut the fuel for you when your nearing red line, it just shifts into the next gear to prevent any damage. Only time i can see the car actually cutting the fuel is when your slipping and siding around and DSC or DTC kicks in and cuts the fuel so you stop sliding or spinning your tires. Theirs definetly something wrong with it being in M mode and auto shifting into the next gear at 2000rpm. Keep us updated on what happens, im not really sure why this would happen.

Its been almost 3 weeks and I still haven't heard anything back. Do I give them more time to sort it out? What are my options if I even have any? I hate driving my car the way it is and am not getting any enjoyment out of it. I don't think its fair for me to have to continue driving with the way it is and racking up the miles on my car. Is it unreasonable to ask for a new car if they can't fix the problem within a reasonable time.
Give them a chance to fix it. Give them a call and see what the status is. I too would like to know if this is a software issue or not. I'm already not too thrilled that the body moldings are painted versus color molding for the interior. When I had a problem with my engine checklight it did take about a week to get an answer and they just replaced the radiator where the sensor went bad.
