E92 Much More Squirrely than E39?

Coming from a 2001 e39, I have to say that my e92 is extremely squirrely on rough roads. If there is any small deviation in the terrain, the front tires like to track into them.

I feel like I'm constantly trying to correct the steering to keep it in a marginally straight line.

It requires constant driver awareness for me to drive my e92 out and about, it seems to have a mind of its own compared to my e39. My e39 was a 525, so they weigh about the same.

I have the sport package, could it be the cursed RFT's that are making my car so squirrely? Is it all in my head?

thanks

Could be rfts. I felt the same way until I replaced them with good old fashioned performance tires.

No, it's not all in your head. The RFTs contribute to that, for sure, as do the larger, wider tires you have with the sport package. I changed my stock 18" RFTs to larger 19" (235 front, 265 rear) non-RF wheels & tires (Goodyear F1's) and I also installed a set of KW Street Comfort coil overs and H&R sways. That pretty much eliminated the squirelly effect entirely and the car not only handles better and corners flatter, it also has a smoother ride.

What you're describing is known as tramlining - the tendency of the tire to follow road imperfections - and it has nothing to do with the car itself or the fact that you have RFT. I'm guessing that your old 525i had 16" wheels with all season tires, while your 335 sport has 18s (19s?) with much grippier summer tires. Big grippy tires are great for spritited driving on perfect surfaces but are not ideally suited for bad roads. Consider getting narrower wheels with all season tires.

Make sure your tires are inflated to the proper pressure. My Bridgestone RFTs are really squirrely if they aren't at the correct pressure.

Think so. Haven't got the E90 335d yet - coming from E39, which as the OP suggests, tracked so well - but I did order the 18" + perf tires to minimize this (potential) issue.
