How old is your Xbox? I believe that M$ has extended the warranty on them because of RRoD. Something like 3 years. Might want to check that route first. My brother-in-law had his RRoD on him (after 2 years), and he cracked it open trying to fix it himself. He didn't know he had another year of warranty coverage, but lost it the second he cracked the seal......

We got ours for the first time a couple months ago. You need to send your Xbox back to Microsoft and they'll send you back a refurbished one that works. The process was actually very simple and we had our new Xbox within two weeks. I was sure I'd be waiting 4-6 weeks but was impressed.

It's happened to me 4 times already. I'm still using the same console I bought 3 months after it came out - I just keep sending it back in when I get the rings. To try to "satisfy the customer" they sent me 1 month Xbox LIVE cards with my repaired console each time. They fail even there, as each card was invalid. I'm expecting to get RROD again before the new year... *sigh*

You can send in your xbox to Microsoft and they will fix it for you BUT Microsoft does not have a permanent fix for the RROD so its just a matter of when you will get the RROD again. Microsoft has tried several band aid fixed and revisions but if you really want to get rid of the RROD forever do this:
http://www.x-clamp-fix.com/catalog/p...x-DIY-Kit.html I have done it and all of my friends who have done it have never had a RROD again.

Ignore the above link, the instructions are valid but they are trying to get you to buy their "kit". This link has a list of materials you will need, any hardware store should have all of this:

RRoD can be fixed either by re-doing the X-clamp that holds the heatsink down or re-soldering allllll of the RAM chips since the original Xbox's were soldered down poorly and may have come up due to heat.
Don't follow the "wrap your Xbox in a towel" trick - that's just fucking retarded. Or just send it into Microsoft and let them deal with it. Take off your faceplate cause they will keep it. |

i've had two 360s, both of them had the RRoD. Thinking about switching to PS3 or just stop playing games.

I beg to differ. It's a superior game system but it doesn't have the online or title strength of the 360. It's also the best bang for your buck blu-ray player out there

This happen to my son's about a month after a friend gave him the box, and as it turned out there was 3 months left on the special warranty they put in place and we were able to send it back to get it fix.
However before that I did research the hell out of the issue and it turns outs that; one you never let a software company design hardware, M$ has no clue. Second this is an over heating issue that the processor get so hot that is cause the solder on it and the surrounding parts to re-flow and the PCB warps at the same time which causes an intermittent connections. This is why the stupid towel method some kid came up with works some times, you get the unit so hot again it warps the board back again and parts re-attach themselves. But you run the risk of seriously damaging the unit. A couple of people figure out that putting in spaces in between the PCB and the heat sink on the processor fixes the problem. From what I saw when I took my son's unit apart this makes sense, since the if the units is over heating the away the have the heat sink fasten to the PCB it could warp the board. So you can but these kits from the folks or figure out yourself how big of a spacer you need. So after getting our fix unit back, we've had no problems with it, but it does not sit on the carpet floor any more and nor does it go inside the electronics cabinet. It sits out in the open not near any other heat sources and we have an extra fan blowing air through the box. |
