Car vandalized. Window smashed. Fix at dealer or 3rd party?
Hey guys,
Someone smashed by driver window and stole my Valentine one . It was in a paid garage when this happened. There is a camera pointing at my car! I in a bit of a rush - should I fix the car at BMW or at any 3rd party repair shop? Does anyone know a reason against going to a 3rd party repair shop? The BMW shop is a bit far, and my insurance (State Farm) say they will have to get out an estimator in 2 days...and there is a risk BMW might overcharge and insurance deny payment above their estimate. I have no window right now and really hard to go anywhere with the freezing weather. The 3rd party shop is more convenient. However, I am worried they wont give best quality. (use 3rd party parts, not assemble door correctly..etc) Anyone with experience? Advice? Thanks Kareem |

Your insurance company has to answer this question for you. Explain that it is freezing and you have no window, so you need an answer immediately. If they are unhelpful, you've learned a lesson that your insurance company sucks and you might consider finding a new one.
As for quality and price, I'm sure there are independent shops that are better and worse than your dealer, and more and less expensive than your dealer. If an independent shop has a good reputation and uses OEM glass, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

i did it through 3rd party and it was done perfect. They get their glass from the same source as the dealer and unlike dealer they come to your house.

I had the exact opposite experience as lipek... the dude was big and was sweating buckets... didn't align the glass right and broke some of the plastic bushings...
I had to go in (the door) myself and fix everything... it would of been better if I just bought the glass and installed it myself! It was cheap though... $200 bux and like lipek, the dude came to my place. But that was my other car when I was in the states... not my BMW... |

Same thing happened to me with my E46. I have State Farm as well and my agent said no problem, but you will have to pay it and we will reimburse you. Got the check within a week. Had the work done at my dealer, went to shut door and glass was hitting, readjusted and all was well. In my case there was tons of glass in the door, and t eh dealer took the time to totally clean it out. Not sure if a 3rd party vendor would have done that. Good luck!

Ouch, that sucks. Looks like 3 series/M3 cars are being targeted a lot lately.

Make sure you report that your V1 is stolen directly to Valentine 1 ASAP. Should make it harder for the idiots that stole your V1 from selling it:
"Each Valentine 1 unit has a serial # on the back of the unit. Users who wish to purchase a used unit, should obtain the serial # from the seller and contact Valentine Research prior to purchase, to make sure the unit is not stolen. Valentine Research will not service or repair stolen units. Once a used unit is purchased, the new owner should contact Valentine 1 to change the ownership information over to his/her name."

That would be a radar detector.
ANyways op, it's awful but hey at least they didn't mess up your interior. I had my windows broken not once but Twice! I just took it the dealer and paid for it. Piece of mind for me and they clean out the bits and pieces that were stuck inside the door frame. Best of luck to you
