Increased Ethanol Blend in US?

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...d=aDXbhz2Kqqyo

I can't imagine how much worse the HPFP problem can get if ethanol cap % increases...

i don't think its the ethanol....i use nothing but sunocco 94 here in canada, it contains 10%...so far no problems....out of all the 335 owners locally, theres less than a handful that have had HPFP problems......

also, in Europe they do have HPFP problems (I've specifically seen this in the Greece and UK forums). They have <5% ethanol there....

but, I do still think that ethanol is in some way related... kind of like cigarettes are to cancer. With no tobacco, there would still be cancer, but it increases the chances.

My dealership has warned me that they have tested the winter blend in this area and expect many N54's in the shop because of it. They're consistently finding 15% even though it's supposed to be E10. However, they understand this and, instead of screwing the owners, they're telling everyone that injectors/HPFP's/etc will be repaired without giving you BS about your tank's contents.

It's nice to see a dealership have that attitude and for them to take the initiative to test the pumps in the area....

Ethonal comes from starch ie. Corn, sugarcane etc. More fields will be used to run our cars than to feed our children. We will demand more starch goods to produce this shitty additive.. for what? To mess up our engine and the economy? No. im against this. If this passes, were buying a one way ticket famine.

+1! Just because your tank says its 10% ethanol, that does not mean you are getting only 10%. You'd be surprised at what you'd find if you were to test some of the "top tier" statsions in your area.

And a big to your dealer for getting in front of this issue.

Pay more for a fuel type that's less efficient and more expensive to manufacture/refine than fossil fuels? No thank you. Not to mention ethanol can degrade rubber seals/tubes as well.

Instead of high fuel prices from oil-rich countries, we'll suffer from high fuel AND food prices. Great move...Not.

Is there any way the regular shmoe on the street can test the ethanol level in a sample of gas or does it have to go to a laboratory for that? Would a hydrometer work if calibrated for gasoline?

Oh yes they are being considered. This is a big corporate welfare exercise, and Big Ag benefits from both high fuel prices and high corn prices. The former increases the value of ethanol, the later is their core business.

It is easy. All you need is a graduated container and water.

Add some water to the container. Note the level. Add the gasoline, again noting the level. Mix well and then let it sit. The ethanol and water will combine and then separate out from the gasoline. Measure how much the dividing line between the gas and water his risen from the original water level. Do the math. (If you added 100ml of gasoline and 50 ml of water, and now appear to have 80 ml of gasoline and 70 ml of water, there was 20% ethanol.)

As always with gasoline -- be very careful.

Here it is being done:

I wonder if they'll push as hard when switchgrass-based ethanol production gets competitive....

The decision has been delayed, but it will most likely be somewhere in between (12% instead of 15%). Corn farmers created a mandate for corn ethanol use, and now they say that they can't meet it without increasing the blending cap. Pretty funny logic if you ask me.

I have had the same thought. How will they protect their corn based ethanol infrastructure? And how much will it cost me?

Yes, do put out that cigarette before delving into this.

All valid posts/responses thus far. Bottom line, the likely increase in ethanol will only exacerbate the HPFP problem that BMW has FAILED to fix since the 2007 model year.
