E46 M3 dilemma
My friend wants to sell his e46 in order to get a new M3 at a very good deal. The problem is i already have a 335i, should i go ahead and get his? It is in prestine condition, the only problem is it has 80k miles. What do you think?

Will it force you to repaint the house?
Also, see this post (I miss canucklion): http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...23&postcount=2

No idea. He hasn't been around in a while. I think some of the old school crew has since moved on to other cars, or they just are talked out on the topic.
But seriously, Solonng - take a look at the threads linked in that post. Lots of information. IMO, E46 M3s are totally cool cars, but don't do it. Especially after painting your house. Also, ase2dais knows this subject. He moved from an E46 M3 to an E92 M3 and those of us who know him are all jealous.

I would pass. I think the car is looking dated now (not bad... just dated). And as someone else said TT M3 is on the way in a few years. Keep what you have and save for that beast. You know it will be expensive!

I consider a car reliable *generally* up to 200k miles.
I also fix the 'little things' myself, so it's no biggie. (ex. a bad ignition module can leave you stranded and can seem like a dramatic failure... but it's $80 bucks and 20 minutes to fix. Do it yourself, and all of a sudden the breakdown seems trivial.) -scheherazade |

80K is no biggie (Its actually considered low by some depending on age of car) and could prove to be very reliable. I know for sure it will give you less problems than your 335. It really all depends on how well it was taken care of. As long as it was not thrashed too hard, serviced, and the valve adjustment was done at the relevant intervals it should be good. Plus those 6 cylinders are known to be some of the most reliable/toughest engines BMW has ever built. Now I have had a BMW that went past the 200k mark and was pretty good even in its old age. Bare in mind that this was a 4cyl, which is generally not as reliable as the 6 cyl engines! Plus M3s are a blast to drive. Don't listen to anyone here who shuts it down. They prolly have never driven one long enough or at all to know the true potential of these cars. Especially on a track! Good luck and happy motoring!

I was just faced with a similar decision. My lease is up tomorrow and I was between getting a 335i coupe and an e46 M3. After much much much consideration I was able to find the M3 I was looking for: 2006 M3, Competition Package, TiAG, black leather, Moon Roof, 30K miles, factory warranty remaining, just had inspection I done. The general consensus of other owners is the car is reliable just costly to maintain....I guess you pay to play. Honestly, I have no second thoughts about the M3 over the 335i. If you do go the way of the M, make sure you are okay with the rawness v. the plush feel of the 335i. I bought it 500 or so miles away and the road trip was a little less than luxurious; not too bad but certain highways were less tolerable than others). I will say though, the inside of the M feels more exotic than the 335...to me at least. Black headliner, the diamond aluminum trim, alcantar wheel and e-brake, the oval rear view mirror, cockpit style seating, M seats....and the exterior...I think I get more looks in it than when I've driven the new M3 (not mine; I have a 328xi sedan...wonderful and safe daily driver but sort of a chick car I've decided...can I say that? I mean, I did lease one...and i will say I did love it...). I think the e46 M3 is MUCH better looking in person than in pictures. Every angle is sexy (I literally had a girl tell me the car was sexy when i was getting in it the other day...)
Then there is the driving...puts a smile on my face every time...I'm like a school girl in love i guess... As for residual value, etc....that's up to you. I don't buy cars just based on those numbers. My emotional reward makes up the difference...or at least I think so. BUT...you can't go wrong either way. Best of luck. |

^^ Yes. E9x is the new chassis which, for the M3, didn't appear until 2008. In MY2006, there were still E46 M3, 325ci, and 330ci in the US, as well as the E90 325i and 330i.
