Winter tires
Just thought I'd poke a thread in the midwest section, as I'm not getting much of a response elsewhere... I am in bad need of a winter tire setup. I could use just the 18" tires, or a 17" wheel/tire combo... If anyone knows of anyone trying to sell either of these two configurations, please forward their info to me, or let me know. Thanks.

I was in the same situation...I just ordered Bridgestone Blizzak WS60's off tire rack. I asked Gill from tire rack what he recommended and he said he has the blizzaks on his 135. I figured if anyone would know, it would be him. I ordered 225/40/18 with a total of $615 which was the best deal i could find which isnt bad at all. I wont get them until this weekend (hopefully) cuz i ordered them last night. From what I hear, those are the best.

Go with 17" Blizzaks LM60 - 18's are too wide and not tall enough.
The Blizzak LM-60 is Bridgestone's Performance Winter / Snow tire developed for the drivers of sports cars, sporty coupes and luxurious performance sedans ... WS is for areas where you get tons and tons of snow. |

Dunlop 3D.
Tire designed more for the sporting aspect of the winter - optimized for the temps in wet and dry roads, notsomuch the white stuff. Unless you're in the sticks, aren't the roads plowed 98% of the time? After years of Quattro I realized - wait - this is overkill: We live in a completely flat environment. They salt the streets even BEFORE the snow comes. When snow actually arrives, it's plowed within a couple hours. If you've got snows, you don't need AWD to get your move on. There's no such thing as without warning unless you don't have a television. You could buy a tire that specializes in ice/snow performance, but unless you live in Fargo or Anchorage, I'm not sure what the point is. EMBRACE THE PUBLIC WORKS THAT KEEP YOUR STREETS CLEAN 95% OF YOUR WINTER DAYS. YOU ALREADY PAID FOR THEM. DON'T PAY FOR THEM NEEDLESSLY AGAIN. |

I've got 18" on as well, 225/40R-18 all around with LM-60. The only reason I chose the LM-60 is that it is the newer version. So far in the last few days of chicago winter, it's holding onto the road pretty well. But just don't do any pedal to the metal or excessive crazy maneuvers while on high speed and snow because the tail will swing some. I attributed that to the fact it is a RWD car and not because of the tire. Maybe I'm wrong? I have no idea since this is my first rwd car.

225/40 - 18 Goodyear Ultra Grip Performance .... best winter tires I've ever had!
They also pass for traction tires should you decide to head up to the mountains

I'd recommend W-Drives by Yoko in a heartbeart. Granted I have a M coupe running a set of 225/40/18, but they grip very well in rain, snow or just cold dry pavement. Passengers who have SUVs are usually impressed at the level of traction.

I have Hankook ice pikes 225/45 r 17 on drag dr 37 wheels. Probably not the greates tire and rim but I dont drive the car that much in the snow. Dont have any complaints so far. You can tell there is a vast difference between the summer tires and these winters. Very floaty and when doing quick lane changes you can feel how floaty they are.
