Been out driving in the snow (335i and 130i)
Just been out driving about in the snow
Thankfully I have winter tyres on - what a difference it's made! People sliding about everywhere, and I'm just pottering on blissfully in comfort and safety In comparison, I've also been driving a 130i which still has Bridgestone runflats... ohmygod what a bag of shite those tyres really are! I'd forgotten just how bad they are in the cold - absolutely NO grip whatsoever, even in a straight line let alone a corner. It's positively dangerous how easily they let go, and there's absolutely no chance of correction because there's just no grip. The ride also on the 130i is atrocious - why oh why did BMW make the rear end SO damn stiff? It's almost back-breaking, even compared to my own car which isn't exactly the epitome of comfort. Have to say though that the 3.0l engine is an absolute dream, with throtte response a turbo-car can only dream about having, perfectly spaced pedals for heel & toeing, steering which is positive but lifeless (still not a patch on the proper hydraulic systems). The gearbox is a bitch when cold, and only mildly better when warm. Short shift kit would make a massive difference to the excessively long throw at the moment. The 130i sport seats are brilliant - MUCH better than the sport seats in the 3er. The dashboard is plasticky, and the fisher-price material used for the binnacle housing is just horrific. But undeniably the 130i is FUN... just not on those tyres in the cold Please everyone drive safe in these wintrous conditions... remember that it's not necessarily YOU that will be unsafe, it could be the other road users around you!

It's really snowing here in Romania too!
I have my winter setup on with 17" bmw style 285 rims and 225/45/17 Dunlop WinterSport 3D tires and I can easily drive around in the snow. Much better than I expected. The DSC and DTC are doing their job very well. It's standing starts and ramps that i happen to get upset by... |

14 mile drive to work in the snow this morning and was amazed how poor the car handled. Even driving in a straight line any acceleration caused the rear to start to slide out. Crap!

Been out in the Land Rover Defender its the one day of the year that you can feel smug, normally its just a tractor.
Been practicing power drifts in Tesco car park. It just does not get stuck. |

Drove today with my 31x10.5R15's. Couldn't get the transfer case to release the front diff for some reason then suddenly it dropped off. Just wish I had heated front seats.
Yeah, drive safe and cautious but only drive if you really have to.

My car was totally utterly rubbish this morning, if it wasn't for some kind people hat pushed me up a 1 in 50 hill I would still be there.
Got home after 5 hours of sliding, couldn't get on the drive. til the wife pushed me AND thats with Mich PS2 non runflats.....another nail in the 335Ds coffin (read excuse to wife for me to change after 3.3 great years)

Got home ok, eventually. Parked on the drive as i couldn't get stright to go in the garage. Went in to get changed and when i came back the car had slid down the drive and has scrapped the drivers side wing on the garage door.

Jesus wept ... this morning was horrific. Sliding all over the place in my 320d!! Thats with non run flats but not winter tyres.
First time i've driven a RWD car in the winter though... a learning experience but one that I came away with no damage thankfully! |

This happened to us last year and I wouldn't have believed it was possible. I had an E70 X5 then, and my wife had been using it for a few days as the coupe couldn’t get out of the driveway. She came home and parked it in the drive and when she went out later it had slipped down the drive into the garage door. It needed the front bumper repaired and painted. We have a very very shallow slope on our driveway. I would never have believed that a car would actually slide on it, especially one as heavy as the X5. |
