About to make the jump..Please help!!

Hi,

SORRY I POSTED THIS TWICE. DIDN'T KNOW WHERE BEST TO POST THIS.
FIRST TIME POSTER.

Well I have a few questions and hopefully someone can help me...

First off I am about to order a bmw 335i coupe. Delivery is expected end of December and the wait is going to kill me!!!

I am torn between 2 colors and have to make a decision by Monday.

My first choice is Alpine White with Coral Red interior or Space Gray with Coral Red interior...

I have always wanted a white car and I think the Alpine White looks stunning on bmw's.
Mind you I have never seen a 335 in white and no dealer here in Montreal has any. They do have a space gray in the showroom and i think the Space Gray is stunning as well...

This is an impression but please correct me if you think i'm crazy. But it seems that the details of a car are less noticable on a white car then on say Space Gray or a Darker color in general...

So I am afraid of going for the white and the color actually not showing the beautiful lines of this vehicule and the outside details like the shadowline for example...
Does someone agree with me or am I just dreaming...

If anyone has actually seen the Alpine white in person what are their thoughts on the color?

Now I just got rid on my car which i had for a year. It was an 2006 Infiniti
M45 Sport with the Tech Package and Entertainment package... Basically every option available to man. I have to admit that the technology in the Infiniti m45 was outstanding and the car itself was a rocket.

I could hook up my ipod to the aux input and watch music videos from my video ipod directly on the front screen ( with a little mod i did to be able to watch tv on the front screen while the car is moving).

Now I am wondering if there is any available mod on the 335i to be able to watch music videos strait from the video ipod onto the screen.

I will be getting the Navigation system on the bmw and would appreciate any comments and info you might have in terms of the actual system.

How it performs, how it looks, how smart it is... Does it have voice activation? Can i control the climate functions, audio functions via voice command?

Now remember i am coming from the latest and greatest in terms of technology from the Infiniti m45.

Another point I would like to note is that here in Canada the bmw assist and bluetooth is a standalone option that costs 1100$ and I am debating if i should get it?
What exactly does this option give me? Does it only give me bluetooth capability and " on star like" functions or am i crippled by not having some other features if i don't opt for that option?

You see in the Infiniti m45 bluetooth comes standard and i didn't really use it much.
The car was automatic and so it didn't really bother me having the phone in hand.
But now i will be taking a 6speed manual and so it might be more useful.

Still i can't justify spending an extra 1100$ just for bluetooth and " on star like" features.
So if anyone can help me out with this and give me a little more info it would be greatly appreciated...

I will probably be taking the park distance control and I am just wondering if it has a visual display in the screen like in the 7 series or the 5 series?

The infiniti had a back up camera which i found to be extremely useful.
The sound system in the Infiniti was outstanding. I am wondering how the upgraded Logic 7 system sounds. Is it good? Excellent? Ok?

You see that is one of the most important things for me in a vehicule and so i would love to know how you guys rate this system...

Lastly Active Steering... What is it exactly? Does it improve the handling of the car? Is it worth the extra 1500$?

The reason I sold my 2006 M45 sport is because i am a 27 year old guy and i just thought it was too old of a car for me. I wanted to go back to my roots of a 2 door coupe and a manual transmission which i missed deeply.

As for the color that is undecided and a couple of options ( that hopefully you might be able to help me out with) here is the specs of the car i will be getting.

2007 bmw 335i coupe 6 speed manual
-Premium Package
-Sports Package
-Navigation Package

Thank you all for taking the time to read the post and help me out with my questions.

P.S: I am asking all these questions here because honestly the salesman at bmw honestly doesn't know much and I figured i can get alot more info from you wonderful people here.

Holy smokes!
I think I just got a headache reading all that...

My advice to you:
1. get a better salesperson who will earn your commision and give you the answers that you want
2. you have to see the colours yourself, listen to the Logic 7 yourself, drive the AS yourself, etc. etc. in order to decide for yourself since you're the one who has to live with your decision.

ok, logic 7 is standard on the 335 and sounds great.

Alpine white is beautiful, go with it. Especially with coral red. I think there are too many space greys out there

The bmw will be more of a drivers car, dont compare it to a m45. The m45 will have better features while bmw's idea is creating a driving experience. There will be no backup camera, and mods for the nav are hard to come by, and not always "trusted"

its also hard to say as to what will be available for the 335 because they just came out, and tuning and cosmetic companies have just started with these cars. It will take some time for all the really cool gadget mods to happen, but i am sure they will down the road

my advice, buy the 335 in alpine white youll love it...but only buy it if you want a drivers car, youll be giving up the ipod videos and backup camera and that coffee machine in the center console- all for driving dynamics

I know i will be giving up some technology. I have always wanted a bmw and so i think this is the one...
I al definitely leaning more towards the Alpine White. I think that most people will be taking this car in Space Gray or some sort of silver and White will be much more rare...
As for using the screen as a "tv" i have seen the tvandnav2go mod and it looks pretty sweet but very complicated. Anynone care to comment on that as well...
Thank you all again for taking the time to read my long post and hopefully I will get some answers to my questions...
Thank you again

I can only help you on the color , AW all the way. The best looking E90 I have seen so far are AW and Artic. You will be surprise to find out the high flexibility to mod a white car e.g. gunmental rims only look great on white cars. Since this is the color you always wanted, forget about space grey, a new color only look fresh to someone for the first 6 months.

About active steering, I have given up telling people how great it is (I have it). There is 90% chance you won't get it because you will not pay for something you don't have a clue what it really is. Once you started to ask around in any bimmer forums about Active Steering, you will still end up with lots of confusions because no matters how great AS some users have said it, there are still a lot of people who will go againts AS e.g. 'you are not in control the steer' . Test drives both? might help or might not help because everybody has a different driving style and cars ownerships history.

Best of luck, welcome to e90post , this is a great family for 3 series fans all over the world.

Thank you cntlaw... Well to be honest i don't think i will be getting the Active Steering. I have already streched my budget by adding some options. But if the Active Steering is that great then maybe i can take off some other options and take the Active Steering to balance out the price...

My 335i Logic7 sounds great to me.

Active Steering = not worth it IMO. Test drive a Bimmer first, and if you love it the way it is, then I see no reason for you to waste that money on this option. I enjoy the standard natural steering feeling. If you want more opinions do a search here on "Active Steering." I don't think it's worth skimping on other options just to get this option.

Park Distance Control (PDC) = yes, it has a display that comes up on the Nav screen. It shows a graphical image of your car, and a certain "bubble" at the rear of the car... as you back up and approach something behind you this bubble gets filled up with Green in the section where the object is located... then yellow then I believe red depending on how close you get. You'll also hear a beeping sound as you get closer, and it'll get faster the closer you get.

I believe there is a PDC camera option for the coupes, available as an accessory... ask your dealer for more info.

Bluetooth = I use it alot with my bluetooth capable phone... I can use voice commands to initiate a call, or any calls received come up and I just drive and talk, no phone in hand. I find it really convenient and most of my callers tell me the sound is clear. It may get unclear when driving with windows down, or talking in a low voice. But the mic is near the driver seat somewhere and if you talk normally it picks it up well.

If you talk a lot and want to be hands-free, get it. Otherwise if it's not a MUST then skip it.

BMW Assist is similar to on-star ... and it's subscription based, so ask your dealer about how long it'll be with you... maybe you won't need this or want to pay for it annually. In the USA BMW Assist was free for 1 year on previous models, and now with '07 it's free for 4 years.

From what you're saying though it sounds like you don't care much for bluetooth or BMW Assist.

edit: the last pic I posted in this thread shows you the PDC image I described above: http://e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33326&page=2

I have an AW E46 and have liked the color. But if I lived in Montreal I would go for space grey or montego blue (but not with the red interior). I would not spend the $ on active steering. The 335 is a great car, you will be very happy with it.

Dude, don't obsess over the options.. I was hell bent on getting nav in my next car, & when I saw the one I bought on the lot (everything I wanted but nav) they made me a good deal & I took it.. All of the options have a cost/benefit that only you can decide. I was on a budget & went w/ sports package over nav.. Someone else would say I am crazy or would just buy both... Color is totally subjective, I am not a big fan of the white, but that is just my opinion... I really like the greys...

Well to be honest i had sooo many cool gadgets in my 06' Infiniti m45 that i just have to get the nav... I would regret it if I don't.
And i personally i think it makes the interior look much more upscale.
The downside is that i have to wait until December delivery possibly even January delivery. They can deifinitely find one for me across Canada before then but none with Nav. It seems it is the one option (here in Canada) that nobody opts. for...

if you don't think you will mod the car, close your eyes and get full options, so all that will just be covered in your lease, simply , no cash ever. why bother to choose which and which and scare about future regrets?

Make sure you test drive a 335i with and without active steering. I was *positive* I would not want a 335i with active steering, and then I test drove both -- mostly concerned with other tech features -- and found that I had to have the active steering. In my (albeit limited) experience (about 2 hours) the active steering seemed to me a "must have" feature.

I also found the sport seats much more supportive, and to me far more comfortable.

Both of these are opinions, and I would encourage you to explore more on your own -- you are buying a reasonably expensive car -- ask the dealer for more access to demo vehicles to help you get the right one. Don't hesitate to ask to schedule a drive of one for an hour or more. Although I am a multiple repeat customer, my dealer has let me borrow a demo overnight to explore options. Find a dealer who will treat you right, or find another dealer.

Thank you Scott for your opinion.
Come Monday I will definitely go into bmw and test drive one with active steering. I just hope they have one. If i'm not mistaken they only have 2 or 3 335's left.
As for the sport seats they come with the sports package and that is a must get option in my book...

If you are getting the Premium Package, Logic 7 comes with it. Yes, Logic 7 is not standard on the 335i as in the US. Something about the premium package... if you figured out that you don't need the logic 7, don't get the premium package. I don't think it's worth the money. But of course, if you decide to get the Logic 7 system, then it may be worth it to pay some extra for the lumber support, folding exterior rear view mirro and the compass display on the rear view mirror. If I were getting a 335i, I wouldn't have gone for the premium package but that's just me.

Yes, the sports package is a must get. And you may want to consider if you want to pay extra for the 19" rim too. That is if you like the design of it. I personally think the 18" on the sport package is quite good already.

The bluetooth and BMW assist is not worth it in my opinion, unless you make or receive phone calls very frequently. It's not worth the $1100.

And to answer your question on the Navigation, it does have Voice control and can control the climate/entertainment settings even if you don't choose the bluetooth option.

And Good luck with ordering you new 335i!

Alpine White (pics below)is a very nice color; if you've always dreamed of one ... then this is a good car to go for it. Altought in winter, make sure you take care of it and wash it often. SG is also nice, but it's about what you like or dream of.

The only thing you get through "Aux Input" is sound, no control or info. So the best choice is to order "iPod Integration" - Dealer only option, once the car is at the dealer they can install it. If you have the Nav System, then you must get this, because your iPod stays in the glovebox and you get all the info on screen, you can control every option of iPod through iDrive or Steering wheel.

Quote:
Now I am wondering if there is any available mod on the 335i to be able to watch music videos strait from the video ipod onto the screen.
Don't know about watching TV; certainly not a BMW option .. but it's all electronics, so some whiz kid out there surely will have something .. but only after market.

It's oustanding, but as with any multi-feature technology ... take a bit of time to learn to use it and the shortcuts; then you will truely enjoy it

With Nav screen; the answer is yes! You get the visual display

You can check out the videos and features on all the BMW websites, bmw.ca; bmwusa.com. Would I get it ... Eeeeiiiinnnnn, not really.

In Most case, this is True ... some or good; but None will come close to the resources of doing your own reseach on the Manufacturer's web sites & definitly nowhere close to the Members of this Forum.

Thank you for your useful comments and info...
Norsk your white 335 looks absolutely stunning.
I am definitely getting the premium package, sports package and navigation package.
As standalone options i think the only thing i will add is the Park Assist.
I don't really think the 1100$ for bluetooth is worth the $$
The dealer ipod intergration is it available here in Canada?
Do you know how much it costs?
By the way i have edited my original post and made paragraphs...
Sorry I didn't really know that I had to...
Hope this helps.
