I just installed a K&N drop in filter, has anyone else done this?

So today I droppped in a K&N filter. Though I am not 100% sold that they do anything more than just save money on buying new filters I put it in hoping it would do what they claim.

After installing the filter I drove the car for a while while doing stuff with the family. Now this may be my imagination because I want to believe it does something but for some reason it seems like the throttle responce from stop to start feels better and reacts quicker. Again I am not sure if that is my mind playing games with me.

I do not know if I can say anything about power and mileage as I only put about 30 miles on it so far.

The install was very simple. Everything came out and went back in with no issues.

I removed the factory filter and replaced it with the K&N however there was some other type of filter screen inside the air box. It did not seem like it removed and I am not sure if it was supposed to stay or not but I left it to be on the safe side.

If anyone is using this filter maybe you can give me your opinion on it. Was it worth it or just a waste of money?

Thanks in advance,

EricO

Thank you for the link and telling me what it is. I am more curious if I should really cut it out or just leave it be. Throttle responce seems better just by replacing the filter. Again I am not sure if it is my imagination.

No carbon filter on european models is correct.
After the K&N filter, the car's throttle responce is much better than before. I wish it wasn't an oiling kit though. I was hoping for a AFE Dry Filter... Maybe I'll get that later on.

K&N is the best after market filter.
It is oily because it attracts more debris and u can clean it in a while and use it again and again and again.

i use the K&N drop in filter, I CUT out the carbon/paper filter, then bored a new hole in the bottom-ish of my airbox and ran a secondary source up to it, removed the rear plastic ribbed tube to the throttle body, and put in a custom black powder coated tube in its place, and will soon have scoops to finish it out.

Never had any issues with the oiling in the filter or anything like that.

Well I just got my reply from tech support at K&N. I think I will leave mine alone as it feels pretty good with the carbon filter in place.

Hello Eric,

Thank you for your interest in K&N products. The carbon filter needs to be installed to comply with emissions testing in the State of California. Please include this email when replying. If you have any further questions, please call our Customer Support Team at 1(800)858-3333. Thank you for writing. Have a great day.

your car will pass without the filter though, it it used to catch fums that come out of the throttle body when the car is off. but for smog the only read the tailpipes, so its not an issue.

K&N just wont tell you to cut up your car, they are smarter then that.

Im pretty sure we might even pass smog with the secondary cats deleted... not 100% on that.

I personally would NOT run K&Ns or any oiled filters because of their possibility of ruining MAFs from over-oiling them. But to each his own

so then you think the AFE dry filter is a better option?

Just some info for anyone thinking about getting a drop-in. www.Carjunky.com has the AFE Pro Dry drop-in filter for $50. This is the non-oiled version that is usually around $75.

I ordered it late last week, and it arrived yesterday, drop-shipped directly from AFE in their own box. The filter is actually white (not blue like some of the pics I've seen), but the part numbers and literature match correctly with the Pro-Dry filter: 31-10131
