3rd Party Warranty vs. Dealership Warranty

guys my lease is up for my 335 and i'm buying it back from the dealer. heres the catch is to certify my car with the warranty until 100K its going to cost $3,000. I've been looking around at after market warranties and some cover just as much as the bmw warranty with the exception of oil changes. Cost total cost for the after market warranty is going to be $2000. What do you guys feel is the better choice?

I bought a 3rd party warranty which is identical to BMW premier extended vehicle protection (the least exclusive option) to extend to 2015 or 100k for $3200 after $500 incentive. I can bring it into any BMW dealer in NA (including Canada) and any disputes go through my dealer, not out of my pocket. I'm only a few weeks with the car and at 37k, but I don't anticipate any major issues with my warranty after reading the exclusionary clause.

The main thing, with any warranty, is to make sure the car is still under warranty when you buy it (inspected and warranty intact) and to read the exclusionary clause word for word. When it references a different section, go read that section. It will most likely end up covering about 2/3 of the contract, but this is not time wasted.

BTM...thanks for your input my friend. If you could send over that paperwork that'd be much appreciated! If you don't mind me asking what company you went through. Although I feel like its only going to dead end since CA is the worst state to buy the extended warranty through. FML. Thanks again for your advice!

It's a Premier Essential Exclusionary Plan insured by Great American Insurance Group. Was sold by the finance advisor, for about $1k less than BMW's and coverage is identical. I'm sure he receives better commission from selling these than the BMW ones, so I was not surprised to find him pushing a 3rd party. I was very hesitant. But the way it works is, you bring the car in, present your paperwork, and they do all the legwork, and guarantee nothing comes out of your pocket upfront, the only thing you may have to pay is for something that wouldn't have been covered under either plan anyway

Bump for slacking.....

I have just over a year left and my dealer just sent me a "$300 off" extended warranty postcard. I called and was quoted the following and felt there was still wiggle room left.

This is third party as described above from Premier....$2500 for 36 months/75,000mi, $100 deductible. It is an exlusionary policy which I need to review.

The problem with some warranties (ie: BMW's warranty) is that you have to be on the look-out for OMISSIONS. Which are impossible to catch unless you know what you are looking for.

By the way, BTM promised to scan his contract back in April!

I purchased what sounds like the exact same warranty as BTM did from Bill Jacobs BMW in the Naperville area. Haven't had a chance to use it yet (still under factory warranty), but sure seemed legit from the contract that I read thoroughly before deciding.

^ If it states that it covers everything except.....then that's fine. The problem is that some warranties state the specific items that are covered and excludes anything NOT listed. The problem with that is you need to know the components of your cooling system or your braking system or whatever system, to see if something was omitted from coverage.

Mine states everything is covered EXCEPT blah blah blah. I believe this is referred to as exclusionary.

^It looks like you are good to go. Hopefully, you don't have to use it.

I'm looking right now too.

A guy on another board said there are actually 2 warranties offered by BMW. I believe one is called extended service the other is extended coverage (something like that).

Anyone he said one covers the general service, brakes etc, the other includes the engine and if anything goes wrong with it (ie, seizes) it is covered.

I've got 2k miles to decide.

Yea that is correct. Extended warranty is the only thing I am considering. Extended service seems like a ripoff.

I bought 3rd party warranty from Mercury insurance group for $1900 ($0 deductible) earlier this year and it will cover me till 2015 or 75K miles. You can get 100K miles also for few bucks more. I only have 34K now and I won't be keeping the car beyond 70K miles.

This is an exclusion policy which covers everything except for what is listed. They deal directly with the dealer in case you have problem and they have some extra incentives like roadside, towing, tire coverage (upto $500) included in the plan.

I have not used it so I can't tell how good it is. It is a big company so I am hoping they will be good.
