I got 2 questions after 2 weeks of ownership

Coming form Audi A4, where if I drive on hway i would get 30-32 mpg and about 24-25 in city....if i drove all day in city and then jump on hway, mpg would increase noticeably....This is not the case with my 335i. I can get up to 28 mpg on hway, but when i drive in city, mpg drops to about 23 mpg and doesnt seem to go back up almost at all....

whats up with that ?

And the second question is: Again in Audi I was able to make both passenger and drivers temp controls operate only by using drivers side control.....can the same be done on 335i or they can only be operated separately ?

Air is completely independent. Only way to have single temperature is to use the defroster setting. Otherwise you must dial individually. There is also the dial in the middle of the vents, but I am not sure how that works if driver and passenger are diff temps to begin with.

How are you calculating the mpg? Are you using the gauge? Overall mixed mileage should be around 23 mpg anyway.

Audi = 2.0L Turbo

335i = 3.0L twin turbo

The extra liter of displacement is consuming more fuel.

You are accelerating faster as well, because you have now been introduced to the silky-smooth BMW In-line 6 motor, which is a joy to drive rather than that crappy 1950's tractor 4-banger POS Audi motor.

Well Audi 2.0t is an award wining engine in European Engine of the year awards.

And it keeps winning 6 years in a row now. With out looking at it, i think the only engine that also won for 6 years was S54.

Yes, i was relying on bmws calculations.

I understand that 3.0tt would eat more......of course..
Its just in Audi it used to go down, and then climb back up once you get om hway, with 335 its almost constant at 23. If i reset before a long highway trip, i see up to 28

Spelling geek here, it is spelled: "whining"

The 2.0t is a perfectly fine 4 cyl engine. Apples and oranges to compare it with an inline 6 cyl.

You need to change your fuel mileage readout to the current setting from the cumulative setting if you want a measure of what fuel mileage you are currently getting. This is explained in the owner's manual.

What year is your 335? As mentioned, if it is a new one, you will have the ALL button. On mpg, you shouldn't really rely on the computer read out. In my Audi and my BMW, they are both off. They both think the car is getting more than it is.

based on his profile it looks like he has a 2007 model. In which case there would be the MAX button which is useless. The same effect of MAX happens when you use auto since it tries to get the that temperature quickly as well.

23mpg average sounds about right. Milage is pretty good when cruising, but the 335 suck major amounts of fuel when your right foot is down. I get 15mpg or so around town, I get nearly 30mpg when cruising at 75-80mph. With Dinan stage 2.

The milage readout is a very rough geustimate. I suggest you start tracking your gas use and milage. In a couple month you'll have a really good idea what the real milage is.

I've tracked the difference between the BC calculated mileage and my hand calculated mileage for 110,400 miles (since I bought the car 4 years ago). I record the BC by tankfull every time I fill up (which is every other day about 12 gallons per fill). The standard deviation of the BC computer MPG is 1.005 (i.e. my car achives a consistent MPG). The standard deviation of my hand-calculated MPG is 1.091 (i.e. the BC is more accurate, which may account for my inaccurate recording of the data from time to time). The interesting stat is the average delta between the BC MPG and my calc'd MPG is -.265, which shows the BC is bit less optimistic, but not by much. Okay I know I'm a geek about this; no flaming please.

Sounds like you better trade in the 335i and get an Audi again - LOL - J/K - Calm Down.

The fact is - everyone is telling you 23mpg is about right - and that's just how the BMW is compared to the Audi.

My question is who cares - your driving a twin turbo - forget the MPG and enjoy.

Now if your mpg is way off and something is causing that - yes get help but it sounds like there's nothing wrong with your car.

Ok - that's just my two cents - Enjoy the Car and hopefully you enjoy the 335i more then worrying why it not like your old Audi.

Regarding the fuel consumption, I have experienced the same: Audi (and VW and Peugeot) calculate the average consumption over a much shorter distance. BMW will calculate the average consumption/speed from the start of resetting. By getting "inside" the boardcomputer, you can read out the exact milage (in km) over which the calculation has been made. Here are the instructions:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4135
And you'll find some other interesting details, such as instant consumption in liter/hour. Have fun exploring that!

You are a geek But a cool one... I used to do the same on my E87 because I had to track milage for work anyways. But eh, 12 gallons per tank? You know the tank holds about 17.3 gallons, don't you? I found out by accident and still made it to the gas station without pushing... Or were you talking imperial gallon? I guess I don't need to explain to you that, consuming say an additional 4 gallons per tank before filling up, greatly reduces you number of gas station stops.
