I've thought of doing that too, but the added maintenance and tire costs are too much for me. I understand tires last about 15000 miles and I can't imagine what regular maintenance costs. I suppose if you can do some of it yourself and get an indy to do the rest it might be doable. I haven't driven one but I can't imagine that it's not a blast...

Maintenance and upgrades are going to be much more expensive. If that is not an issue go for it.

I say test drive one and talk to a couple of M5 owners. If their horror stories about maintenance don't scare you off then buy it

both my bosses each has an m5, the car is a fucking beast and the dct transmission on it is

however they have to be putting oil every so often and the tires have to be replaced pretty often too, they are still under the original warranty/maintenance plan so is no biggie, they've had them for about a little over 3 years now and zero problems. i say go for it

My roommate doesn't like his 06 m5 because of the SMG. 6 speed would be a different story.

06 M5 has SMG, no DCT. DCT is new for 2011. M5s have a reputation for being expensive to drive and maintain (12MPG is not unusual). Great car if you aren't expecting to use it for a daily driver, IMO.

Not sure if that would be an upgrade depending on the year 335 you have. I would never buy an M car second hand unless it had really low milage.

If you don't mind how much it costs to maintain... go for it!

I would never buy a used M car just because the odds that it was not pushed to the max is very very low

Having been a former E60 M5 owner, be hugely prepared for the following cost increases ...

1. Tires every 7000-8000 miles for the rear (at $500/tire) and every 12000-13000 miles for the front (at $450/tire). I used TireRack-shipped Michelin PS2s.

2. Insurance - rates will be sky high (like over $2000/yr) if you're under 25 with at least 1 ticket. Decent ($1400 to 1800/yr) if over 25 with no tickets.

3. Gasoline - you WILL visit your favorite refueling station at least 2 to 3 times a week. When the low fuel light comes on at 1/4 tank after only 130 miles and an average 12 mpg of driving, the car is for you as long the words ''I can't stand the horrible mileage'' don't ring in your head ... ever.

If none of the above even make you quiver the slightest, by all means the M5 is an AWESOME car! The V10 wail is addicting as well as the handling. But seriously, save your hard-earned money if ANY thought of losing a ton of money on driving costs makes you uneasy. The M5 is not a practical car (money-wise) by any means. It's a car meant for indulgence and excess for those who have tons of $$$ to spare. My spare money went bye-bye ... hence the 330i I now drive.

Good luck finding a low-mileage 2006 CPO ... it's been over 4 years since the E60 M5 came out, so the majority will have tons of miles + wear & tear. And if the SMG fails outside of warranty, be prepared to write a check for $16,000. If you're still serious about an M5 and cost is NO issue (seriously!), seek out an LCI '08, '09, or '10 that still has decent mileage and an active warranty for added peace of mind.

A friend of mine just bought an E60 M5, couldn't get it smogged until he finally took it to the referee.

Spend some time with the SMG trans. Coming from a manual, i didnt mind it, but at the end of the day I went with the 335i bargain.
Seems with the right tune the 335i can hang with the M5.

I thought about 08 535i as well, then add Msport kit. Has the updated headlights, and tails! Need wheels, a front bumper mod, bc Stock they are weak looking.

Oh and i dont believe that 335i bridgestone rft's last any longer than 15k mi. Gotta pay to play.

335i without tunes is powerful enough. I don't understand why you need or want an M5. Just my opinion

328i is powerful enough, why did you get a 335i? Come on...

I see what you're saying, but you kind of missed the point. Stock 335 with the low end torque and being a turbo car, is PLENTY fast for most as a regular DD. Like any other //M you need to be >5K RPM's to get any kind of "real" enjoyment out of the car, which let's face it....isn't very often on day to day driving.

Living in the city with bogged down traffic, I'd honestly take a 335 over an M3 (I know we're talking about the M5) any day. More fun too IMO.

328....let's not even bring this into the debate. There is no comparison.

Why would the M5 smg pump cost 16k? My smg pump on my e46M went out and it was only a $3500 bill. Or are you talking about the whole tranny?
