New e92 328i coupe Owner.. question!
Hello All,
I just got a 2009 328i coupe sport AT with only 500 miles on it. It got delivered just about an hour ago, and one thing I noticed when drove it just around the block (it's not registered or insured just yet so I couldn't take it for a long drive) is how heavy it feels.. the steering feels kinda heavy and I really have to push down on the accelerator to get the car going (handbrake was all the way down.. I didn't drive it faster than about 15mph) Does that sound about right to you? I'm coming from a '06 Mazda3 hatchback with is super light to drive for reference. Also, I noticed the low tire pressure light was on (although all 4 tires looked and felt normal). Not sure if that has anything to do with it. Thanks! |

Didn't you test drive it before buying?
Steering wheel is heavier than other cars, but that's one of the better characteristics of BMW's. As for pushing down the accelerator, it might feel sluggish because of the lag associated with AT's. Try going past 15mph next time. As for air in your wheels, measure it yourself, don't rely on the system. They could be low on air even if they look fine, due to the construction of run-flat tires.

TPM might be on cuz it hasn't calibrated it self yet
put on manual mode and start from 1st gear or on DS mode. AT starts off on 2nd gear i believe, thus feeling more heavy/sluggish.

BMW drive-by-wire needs more push to get going than many other cars. If you're coming from a Mazda3, it's like opposite ends of the spectrum. As said above, the "heavy" steering is a characteristic. It's not overboosted like most cars on the road. You'll get used to the steering and throttle, believe me.

Thanks for the responses. I did want a 6MT (the Mazda is a MT), but got a pretty amazing deal on it so I couldn't be too picky.
Makes more sense now after reading about dbw. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drive_by_wire Anyway to increase the throttle response? edit: nvm, i did a search and saw that I'm not the only one with this question. Last edited by pstyle; 05-18-2010 at 12:58 PM.. |
