Interesting article on Ferrari cost of ownership.
I had an acquaintance that owned an 80's mazer bi-turbo, and since the mazer dealer here is/was attached to the Ferrari dealership, he always had tales of incredible maintenance bills. Why he took it to a dealer and not an independent, I dunno.
Some of the charges for stuff that was done to the car in the article is dubious (like $1200 to refinish the wheels), but it's still interesting. http://www.sportscarmarket.com/articles/archives/939 I've also hear Porsche maintenance is close behind. And what's kept me from buying an older 928 or 911 as a fun car. PS. Moral of the story seems to be, if you want a Ferrari lease a new one for 2yrs drive the hell out of it and then ditch it. |

eh... doesn't really suprise me. They can charge a premium and people will pay it.
I test drove a Maserati Quattroporte a month or so ago, and the sales associate said that the oil change alone is $400.

what, even the windshield fluid is "high-performance" in ferraris?? OMG! even if i had the money, i'd hate the hassle of constantly having my car in for repairs for mostly ridiculous issues. wow!

its like owning a yatch, the up keep is a bitch. but when you have that kind of money its not really an issue, if it is an issue you probably over reached on your car.

I think a lot of it's self fulfilling ... people with enough money to maintain a Ferrari probably wear it as a badge of honor that they spend that much to maintain it. Plus it also carries the mythos that a Ferrari is a high strung, high performance machine if it's always breaking. Reality is it's just masking low volume production/engineering flaws.

people probably push their ferraris a little harder than the average car. if you drove a normal car like a ferrari all the time the normal car would have serious issues too.

Anytime somebody references the great 928 I have to respond. I owned a 1983 Porsche 928 for about 4 years (sold when I got married), and let me tell you, this model has such a fanatical, if cult, following that support/parts services have flourished accordingly. It was cheaper for me to maintain my 928 than the Accord I owned in college, due primarily to 928 Specialists and 928 International, each phenominal companies with thorough 928 knowledge and shelves and shelves of parts. If you want a 928, go for it. The utterly intoxicating V8 burble and the sheer innovation of its timeless design will validate whatever price you pay the first time you get behind the wheel. My next car purchase--shocking no doubt after my brief and indifferent post --is going to be a 928 GTS (350hp, torque for days, arguably one of the sexiest GT designs ever).

Based on what I read on Fchat, if you actually drive a ferrari or any car for that matter a lot, it tends to have A LOT less problems than garage queens.

If I remember correctly, 12-cylinder Ferraris sting you with $5k majors because the engines need to be removed. For the 8s this is not a requirement and therefore comparatively cheaper to service. Still, I would say a Porsche, unless perhaps a Carrera GT, is not even on the same planet as Ferrari and Lambo in terms of service costs.

Porsches are much much cheaper to maintain than Fcars. They are very good daily drivers too. and the engines need to be removed on some of the 8's, I believe 348, 355, 360, and Mondial have engine-out majors. I can't remmber what they do for the 12's. And the 550 is supossed to be one of the more reliable ferraris with the least problems...

My bad, thanks for the info. Master Deep. Man, even the "lowly" Mondial? You're right on about P-cars. I used my 928 as a daily driver for quite a while and it never failed me besides expected wear and tear--and this was nearly a 20 year old vehicle when I purchased it!

There's buying the car and there's ownership. I guess an extended warranty is in order if we end up keeping our E90's for more than 4yrs(50k+miles).

Yea my neighbor just sold his 86 911 factory turbo-look cab for a mondial T. He said he has to get the 30k done and it's $5k since it's an engine out service.
You don't need the extended warranty on an e90. lol If you keep up on mainentance and drive the car it will be fine. |
