Don't have it in mine - but I believe it controls the cooling for that compartment.

Cooler for the cup holder. Newer E9xs don't have that anymore.

See those vents in the cupholder- those are connected to the HVAC system. Turn the switch on and you'll have hot or cool air blow over your drink, depending on the season. You'll really only want to use it with cool air, in the summer.

Kind of neat, but that cupholder is in such an awkward position I seldom use it.

When did they stop doing that? I have a Jan 09 build with every option and I don't have the switch.

The can cooler was dropped from March '09 to save BMW money. If you open the vent in the can holder with the switch, the temperature of the air blowing through the holder is set by the temperature of the rear ventilation unit.

It is best used for keeping a can of soda, or something similar in size, cool on a long trip. It isn't supposed to be a drink holder as it would be in a pretty stupid place for that purpose.

As an aside, I know you guys hate the cup holders but if you only ever want to hold a standard size can of soda in it, they are perfect!

Useless and never used it. Now we just need a DIY to reroute that under the drivers seat as a ball-cooler.

Nice! My car has it and I never knew what it was...thought it was only a ejection button for some plastic peices in the center console.

Gonna try it tonight. thanks guys

quite useful actually. It cools down the hard drive I've plugged in the USB port.
Just need to remember to turn the switch off in the winter...

How big is your hard drive? I got a 16 GB flash drive that barely gets warm.
