Praying mantis = good omen or grim reaper?
Im going to make the story short and sweet. Bought a CPO 3 months ago (07 328i). Tonight driving down the road a car brakes hard in front of me, i have to slam on my brakes so i dont collide with the other car. My brakes feel like they lock up, i hear scraping and tires squeeling qnd it feels like i ran over something.
I continue driving maybe 200 yards and dont notice any irregularities. When i brake i feel the same jerky bump as if i ran over something. At the stop light i hop out to make sure nothing is stuck under thr car. Another motorist says it looks like my wheel is loose. I park and check the damage: My driver front wheel is a full 4 inches off center. Side skirt/fender is damaged where tire impacted the fender well. Anyway... Point of the post... After we get the car on the rollback (thanks to an awesome tow guy). A praying mantis flies up and lands on my car. And remains on my car for as long as i can see... Good or bad? Ideas on damage? |

I'm going to say a bug is a bug........ If you're going to use that as a oracle for the future, well..... ummmm.......
But crappy to hear about the car. Sounds like a strut broke or something like that. |

Heard back from the BMW Tech this morning. He has no idea why but my control arm snapped in two places. Apparently he's calling in an engineer to look at it on Monday; they'll set me up with a loaner and all that jazz. I really have no idea how something like this could happen. I don't know if this is something that the techs could have picked up on when they did the inspection & CPO review...
We'll see how it plays out i guess |

MABEY THE REASON WHY THE GUY IN FRONT BRAKED SO HARD WAS TO AVOID SOMETHING IN THE ROAD ?
AND YOU DROVE OVER IT ... perhaps stop reading into intangible meanings of insects resting, and consider the obvious ?

This is the second instance of a control arm snapping under braking I've heard of. A co-worker of mine's brother, who lives in New Jersey, snapped his left control arm under hard braking going into an exit ramp and hitting a pothole at the same time. His car is a 2006 325i w/sport package. I'm starting to wonder if metal fatigue is starting to play a role in the durability of the E90 suspension.

Braking shift the weight of the car. Whacking a pothole at the same time is outside the normal parameters. The same thing happened to the OP. |

I definitely considered this... But they didnt swerve to miss anything just hit the brakes to avoid another car... Also no potholes, the roads are freshly paved

well, look at it this way, the mantis will eat any aphids you have on your car, and at least you won't have to worry about those.
(sorry about the car though, hopefully you'll get that fixed right up) |

Aluminum! Upside = no flex. Downside = no flex.

Huh? What kind of dealer takes "a couple weeks" to replace a control arm?

I wonder if an M3 suspension control arm would withstand greater impact forces. |

I would vote for the "ran over something." Normal, panic braking should not snap a control arm. Be sure to post the post-mortum.
I had a 94 500E and came up on a 15' extension ladder on the freeway. This is something you're not going to miss. Fortunately, the ladder was laying "with traffic", not horizontal to traffic. The cars & trucks ahead of me were clearing it okay so instead of creating a big accident trying to avoid it, I grabbed the wheel and ran straight over it. I had visions of it removing many pieces of the underside but somehow, i cleared it. It would not have been the same story in my E36 M3 or a MSport 335.

I think we need to go with the obvious and most easily-explained scenario: the mantis didn't know you were CPO and was going to pray with you in anticipation of getting the bill!

So i got a call from the service department today; they said my driver front tire had a tear in it and would need to be replaced (under warranty) and that my passenger front tire should also be replaced (due to wear - not covered under warranty) and would cost 380 installed. I bought the car May 2010 (less than 3 months ago) with 41700 miles on it (i think i just hit 43500) and he's telling me the wear on the tire warrants being replaced? Called up my salesguy, told him how uneasy i was feeling considering i had a control arm randomly snap and now i'm being told at least one tire needs to be replaced (when upon purchase, i was told i had all 4 brand new tires). After about 20 minutes i get a call back saying "there was miscommunication" and that i don't need new tires. He also verified that i had brand new tires put on upon purchase... Seems a little fishy... Regardless - car is in the body shop and should hopefully be done soon. |
