I'm guessing you have an automatic. That's the kickdown switch. Do some searching.

yes its a auto/step but i had the car in auto

well i found my answer its a kick down switch wich drops the car into the lowest gear it can without hitting redline. Sorry guys i should of done my homework 1st.

yea its the kickdown switch, like stated it just drops it into the lowest available gear for passing purposes, if you let off it just as fast though the car probably freaked out and hesitated with the revs.
