Red face RPM drop when shifting? 6sp 335i

When you guys shift gears how much of a RPM drop are y'all experiencing? The reason is I always seem to get a 700-1000 rpm drop from gears; I shift in second gear at 3000 and end up starting at 2000 in third gear. I try to shift gears as fast as possible. I've been driving manual for almost ten years now and just started to notice this happening. I'm not sure if it is normal, especially after reading this post:

Yeah, the RPMs drop about 700 to 1k RPM when you shift gears. If they don't, that's when you have a problem.

Completely normal pal. You said you have been driving manual cars for how long?

I have noticed this too. I have tried speeding up my shifts but it only helps a little. Can't tell you if this is normal behavior.

I find the trickiest shift is from 1st to 2nd in terms of managing the RPM drop. Are you experiencing problems while driving with the AC on full blast? That will definitely drop your RPM between shifts more so than usual. If all else fails, just shift slightly higher, at around 3500 RPM to get a smoother shift.

1st to second is definitely the trickiest. You have to rev to about 3500 rpm to be smooth.

1->2 gear ratio is about 2:1

U either have to shift really early or rev high

If you refer to the post I was talking about, that guy talks about how 500 rpm drops are optimal. I tried doing it and I couldn't achieve it; therefore I posted my question. I normally don't notice what my rpm drops are, as long as my shifts feel smooth.

Yeah, I have my AC usually on full blast because it is hot in Texas haha.

the revs on the 335s drop notoriously fast. thats why alot of people tend to complain about how getting it into gear and the 1-2 shift is kinda rough. i say its totally normal.

Its not the first time i read this.. but have any of you guys though about applying slight throttle pressure while shifting? I know you need to take your foot off the gas to granny shift this car, but if you give it just a "bit" to keep the revs from dropping, you can shift as slow as you like..

1st to 2nd is a bit tricky. I can nail it when I'm driving alone, but I tend to drive a bit aggressive and that's what I'm accustomed to. When I have to slow it down to keep passengers from complaining, I lose my rhythm and don't get a smooth shift every time.

I have to rev match from 4th to 5th and 5th to 6th by tapping the gas with the clutch in. It's impossible to shift it quick enough to get a smooth transition in those gears unless I just want to jam it into gear and tear up the synchros.

This is all with the A/C compressor on. It's not near as bad with it disengaged.

This is very normal. Long throw stock shifter plus CDV induced delay can easily end you up with 700-1000 rpm drops. Over the time you will get use to it and tune to shift faster and smoother.

Remove the CDV and install a short shift kit makes a big difference. Although some people don't believe the CDV removal thing, I haven't heard one case people is not happy with CDV removal and want the CDV back. I am obviously biased because I am selling the modified CDV in Marketplace right now
