Just picked up '07 E92 last night, few quick questions.
Hi all. Traded my Lexus IS300 in and what a difference!
Anyway, I'll be quick. Car is 2007, has 51k miles. Manual, loaded, everything except Comfort Access, USB port and M-package. Questions: Maintenance. What's the maintenance interval on these cars, what's involved and how much is it? Maintenance as in timing belt/water pump in other cars (yes I know it has chain, not a belt ). Warranty. I'm aware of the HPFP extended warranty, how do I check "regular" warranty? I keep reading about people taking their cars to the dealership to update software. Does it cost anything if the car is out of warranty? If yes how much? Something rattling in the exhaust in the back when starting the car and under certain RPM's, is that common? I will be checking it today, where to look? I read about wastegate rattle and it doesn't sound like a wastegate, more like a lose heat shield somewhere in the back. Thanks in advance for the answers. "Heat Shield" rattle is actually the wastegates Something rattling in the exhaust is the Exhaust Valve and its normal for it to rattle a bit......Its there to warm up the cats, but since you are out of warranty anyway, might as well disconnect it like lots of people here do. Takes 30 secs. Wastegate repair is usually a 3 step process at dealership. 1. Update Software, if not fixed > 2. Replace wastegate actuator, if not fixed > 3. Replace turbos |

The dealer will (and should) charge for software updates. The amount depends on the time required for the update. |

Wastegates are part of turbo assembly in this car, right? The rattle comes all the way from the back, somewhere between the mufflers.
I had a TT car before (Mitsubishi 3000GT) so I'm quite familiar with TT setups |

You're out of warranty, software updates will probably cost you around $300.
some rattle during engine start/warmup and when you accelerate when cold is ok, my car has it, I asked my adviser and he said it's normal due to turbos. Not sure about the turbo reliability in the long run...I'm praying myself. Do your oil change every 7k miles. And then some filters, inspections... some inspections will cause $800 to $1000 bucks. |

As for large maint. items BMWs tend to have trouble with the cooling system, and more specifically the water pump. I have always changed out the water pump at 80k miles, and while in there, the radiator, expansion tank, thermostat and housing, belts, and tensioners. The problem is that the water pump can damage the engine quickly if it goes. Now there was some discussion on a thread earlier about the E9x water pumps. When I recommended this preventative maint to another person another member noted that the E9x has an electronic pump and it is significally more expensive than previous BMW pumps. I currently have a letter into Mike Miller at Roundel asking if the preventative maint. interval is the same for these pumps. IMO the answer will be that it is too early to tell if these pumps have a problem and that BMWs have always needed them changed out so you might as well stick with that until some other evidence is determined. But we'll see what he says. Congrats on the new car.

I had a similar rattle from the drivers side exhaust at 1200rpm, like when pulling away from a stop sign.
I took a look under the car and found that the muffler hanger had come loose from the stud on the body. I found a nut that fit the stud, bolted the hanger securely and the rattle is gone. Check that before you take the car to the dealer.

Dude I had a 3000gt and this 335i is way more high maintenance. And the power band is completely different as you've probably noticed.

Members will voice their opinion and say that the oil doesn't need to be changed that often. However, I change mine every 5k just for a peace of mind. My 335i, also a 2007 model, has 61k on it and aside from the fuel pump crapping out at around 37k, it's been good to me so far. |
