bmwusa new 5-series

New 5-series is on bmwusa website future vehicles. Looks like it's getting the idrive with memory keys. Also not clear how the M aero kit falls into play - standard on higher model, packaged or still an accessory?

I hope this isn't a repost. Knowing me it is.

edit: Sorry, I keep forgetting we have a general cars talk forum. Repost .

I noticed that a few hours ago, as well. They're going with the N54 as well. I was hoping it'd be kind of an exclusive engine to the little cars. But all is well.

I like the new shifter. I think it would be sweet on the 335i.

"...No matter how powerful it gets, the 5 Series knows its own strength, and exactly how to apply it. With standard 6-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission, you’re always in optimum gear. In fact, shifting couldn’t be more effortless with a new ergonomic electric shift lever. And the optional sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters, offered on our 535i and 550i models*, lets you take even more power into your own hands..."
So the 5 series come with steptronic instead of manual?

no engine will be exclusive.
If itis good then why not put it in other models and sell more cars and beat MB or have they?
A exclusive is like the CSL car.

The latest Online Ordering Guide shows it as an available option for all 3-series (incl E93) from SOP 03/07. So it will apparently be available on the 3-series before the 5-series.

Yeah, the skirts really do make the 5 look nice. Such a small detail, but it difuses the "slab" look nicely.

As for the non RTF option, I hope that this gets extended to the 3 series as an option, if not included w/ sport.

The lights have also changed, LED is now standard.
Looks great!

With the new engines and new looks, E60 looks really fresh and new, after 4 years on the marked.

Unless they plan on giving the 4.8L V8 a power increase, then who will choose a 550i over a 335i? The 3900lb E93 335i is only just slightly slower than the current 3800lb E60 550i. So a 3600lb-3700lb e60 535i is going to be neck and neck with the 550i, if not faster. I suppose they figure the M-sport suspension will be the selling point? Its possible the 550i will get the rumored turbo v8, but then you'd think they would have changed the name to 555i or something similar. Of course they could still change the name later, and just be holding back the details for now. But I also thought that the new v8 would not be ready until the next generation 5 series. So it will be interesting to see if that got moved up or what.

Another thing - why so much secrecy with the e90 refresh, while this one is being advertised months in advance? (really more of a rhetorical question - but here's more fuel for the people upset by the early demise of the 330i)

I assuming it will be possible to retrofit the "usb aux in port" into our cars?? Maybe then get a quick software refresh?

here's a cheap comparison. silver is "old" and blue is "new." to be honest, i don't see many, if any, differences. seems like the changes were made on the inside.

I called the headlights when we saw some spy photos of this so called new M5 which was only a 5 with aero. Noone has mentioned yet that the new 5 gets clears w/ bumper reflectors in the US. I think it's a good thing but I don't think the orange in the 5 was as disliked as in the 3.
