BMW UK Winter Tyre Program

Although on a day like today it seems crazy, I phoned my local dealer to ask about the BMW winter tyre program that's been reported on in the media. They are doing three packages, steel 16x7 wheels with either runflat or non-runflat tyres, or 17x8 alloys with runflats, with prices from £650. The interesting part for me (having no garage or garden storage) is that the price includes two wheel changes a year and they will store your summer alloys/tyres. Apparently they are getting stock brought over from the continent to ensure supply.

Obviously nobody knows what the weather is going to do, but I think this makes a lot of sense. It's not the cheapest option, but I didn't expect owning this car to be cheap. Having someone else store the damn things is essential for me. What do other people think?

Don't worry with this. I have a garage and a spare set of wheels which I have just put winter tyres on and therefore guarantee that it will be the mildest winter on record

The interesting part of this is the "or non runflat".

Slightly OT

I'll also post something in the classifieds, but this an appropriate thread as well!

I have a set of wheels with winter tyres that I'm considering selling.

They are OEM MV3's, slightly curbed, with Vred Wintrac Extremes (225/40 and 245/40). Tyres are one season old and have covered approx 1500 miles.

Had these on the 335d and they were superb!

PM me if interested.

I would have thought that 16x7 wheels would be best.
When I enquired a few years ago at local stealer about snow chains for my 320si they said you cannot have them with 18" wheels. Maybe they plan on selling the winter tyres with chains. Bit expensive though, I wonder how much our european neighbours pay for this service. Probably 650 Euros no doubt....

I would hope that as the wheels & tyres are supplied and fitted by the dealer, through BMW themselves, the warranty would be unaffected and the insurance companies can just suck it up. All good questions to ask though.

All we need now is an enterprising tyre fitter chain to do the same and undercut them. Also I am wondering do you actually buy and own the winter tyres/wheels or do you just 'rent' them over the period of use?

Well, I'd be delighted if someone would; apparently this (changing and storing your other wheels) is standard practice for garages on the continent. Although from (2nd hand) experience of some budget tyre fitter chains not being able to tighten wheel bolts properly (on a 350Z ffs) would you trust them?

I'd hope for that price you'd own the wheels & tyres because 4 x 17" alloys are what, £800 trade? 4 x winter tyres for £120 trade? = ~ £100 profit to the dealer. Worth making sure though.

Dont really want to hijack this thread, but is is related. I was looking at the Canadian BMW site : http://www.bmw.ca/ca/en/owners/acces...ble_spoke.html and wondered if the syle 156 will fit a 320d as I thinking of getting a set. Any ideas? Thanks
