Drove A Cayman S Today
It was my first Porsche and it was amazing. I'm glad to see that I'm in a community that can appreciate something superior to their own world; I've seen tons of respect for Porsche here in the BMW world, and now I know why.
My car is actually much faster than the Porsche I drove, but it really doesn't matter. Driving that thing was seriously amazing. It was *driving*. It was so raw. I'm not sure I'd own one, though. It didn't have half the luxury features my car has (not even power seats for over 60K), but the drive was phenomenal. When I got back in my car I really felt like I was in a luxury car that was insulating me from the road. Anyway, I really enjoyed it. |

I love the Cayman-S. Tradition aside, I feel it looks sexier and sleeker than the benchmark 911.
It's interesting that Porsche fitted the Cayman S with taller first and second gears so it wouldn't beat a 911 to 60mph. I would hate to work on the engine though. It's so hard to get to. |

I'm looking foward to the 998. They are supposed to have more powerful and economical direct injection engines, that I'm guessing won't weigh more then the ones now.

I've been longing to drive one - but it'd be a 911!

That is the thing that I missed with my Boxster S (987S). I mentioned it before that if I can afford both cars, the 335 and the 987S, then I will keep the P car but practicality dictates that I have to let go of my Porsche. I am taking delivery of my 335 this Friday via PD and getting excited.

1. There is no Cayman Turbo. You're thinking of the Cayenne Turbo.
2. How hard would it be to change the gearing on the Cayman? I would love to undo the detuning that Porsche AG did to the Cayman, as I think it looks much better than a 911 from behind. 3. Yes, the Cayman is horrendously overpriced for what you get, both with respect to Bimmers and to Porsche's own line of Boxsters. Let's not even go there about Porsche option overpricing. While I love Porsches and can afford to buy a Porsche, with cash outright, I'd feel like a sucker for doing so. I can only hope the German government makes Porche AG divest its shares of VW and thus allow Audi to come out with its R6 Cayman killer, which the evil ever growing Porsche AG empire has forced Audi to stop development on. |

I test drove a Cayman S before ordering my 335 e92.
The Cayman is a stupendous car. The handling is almost telepathic. I was taking sharp turns at over 100mph and the car just stuck to the road - no understeer - no body roll - felt like I was driving something out of a video game. BUT. you can't use it as a daily driver. A friend of mine works for Porsche and let me have the Cayman for 3 days. I began to hate driving it during the daily rush hour traffic. Car was way too loud and rough around the edges. So ended up ordering the 335 instead (which costs almost the same as the Cayman in Dubai - Middle East). The 335 is probably the perfect blend of luxury and speed I have ever seen. Almost as fast as a Cayman S but about 300 times more comfortable. |

It is supposed to be 7 stars and to be very honest it is incredibly tacky. The interior of the hotel is mix of crimson red, navy blue and 22 carat gold plating. An assault on your senses.
But that is Dubai for you - the Las Vegas of the Middle East. The most surprising thing about dubai would be that despite being a muslim place they have clubs dedicated to hookers. Thats right there are clubs which contain nothing but hookers (anywhere from a few hundred to a thousand depending on the club) from russia, china and africa. And you can take anyone home for $300. Its a crazy place. Back to cars. The problem with being in such a small place is that there is only one dealer for each brand of cars. So they end up dictating the price and you get shafted. Porsche here offers only a one year warranty (and their servicing can vary between $500 - $insert amount per service depending on the work done on the car) I am paying $64K for the 335 e92 - Tiag, black leather - almost fully loaded (no comfort access or active steering). But the plus point was the 60K miles free maintenance and servicing. This is the price you pay for a tax free life (used to live in Va before I moved here) |

If you think the new Porsches are "raw" go back and drive some of the older air cooled 911s. The new ones are downright big plushy toys in comparison.
They're not real fast, and they were even a bit portly for their time. But the throttle response is so explosively immediate and the handling so communicative that you feel like you can do anything ... until you lift suddenly at anything above 7/10ths and find yourself swapping ends. My fav, and hopefully I have money/time/room for a 3rd car some day, is the 964 RS America. I've never gotten to drive one, but I've driven a couple of 964s. I drove one 993 but wasn't as impressed. Rode in a couple of 996s and really felt the designs gone all wrong. I think it's up to the boxster/cayman platform to really re-establish the sports car nature of Porsche (excluding the 996/997 GT3 of course). Sure the 997TT is faster than hell, but it's also big and heavy. |
