Remap insurance?

Hi all,

Just wanted to know if any of you have remaps and whether you have declared this with your insurers as guessing there is a 'big' difference in costs??

I'm with Priviledge and they declined to insure me. I was just enquiring at the time, I've not remapped yet.

I've had it done on a few previous cars and never declared it. Had a an Audi go to main dealer for a new gearbox just inside its warranty and they never found it. Another BMW in for free service, no problems there. I would have thought these would be the first places to discover a remap.

Where u going to get it done, I can recommend a good tuner local to us both and could get it done for a discount. Have used him a few times and more then happy.

Because you're technically not insured if you don't tell them.

And, to preempt the next question, if the claim is substantial, you can bet they will find out.

I would say budget around £100-200 increase.

It's been covered before, but just declaring 10% increase in power rather then say the full 20% +is an option.

I've done it for my Jb3, I stated +20% BHP (i.e. +60bhp) and Sainsburys insurance added £170 per annum onto my existing £1200 premium.

They have grades of bhp upgrades to ECUs +10%, +20%, +30% etc.

Some insurers will decline though, so make sure you ask BEFORE you get the work done.

I also declared my suspension mods, all under 'lowered suspension less than 100mm' for another £40 per year.

Playing 'devils advocate', if you have bought used, could you deny all knowledge of it if subsequently discovered?

Maybe, but in law you're still responsible for every aspect of the vehicle as it is YOUR vehicle, pleading ignorance is no excuse and the insurers would go the same way for sure.

It's all black and white to them.

I'm pretty certain that the re-map date will be logged in the ECU.

I queried this with Aviva and was told that provided the tyres are of the originally specified size, there is no problem, nor is there any requirement to declare the change.
However, their response was entirely different regarding a re-map. I made a tentative enquiry and they would not quote in general terms; I would need to give the exact details of any proposed change in advance.

insurance is mental these days, no wounder quite a few drive without it. It's even worse when you live in a random postcode they rate as high crime rate, they bump up prices by so much.

I remember doing a quote on an M5, cheapest I got was £12,000 but an m3 was £3,100. Don't know where they make the prices up from.

In answer to the OPs question, my insurance rose by £100 for my remap which is a 15% increase as per the Mappers quoted figures on their website.

I declared mine (previous 320d) on our company insurance (covering 3 vehicles) and had no increase.....we were obviously paying too much already...!!

Hopefully this won't degrade into ANOTHER completely pointless 'I paid xxx' thread

My experience was the same as DBs in post #7
The nice thing with mods, is they are often cumulative and so hard to quantify bhp increases for the insurer.

And a JB can be set up to give only 10% on map 1 if you wish, the other maps can be saved for use on the drag stip or track.
Wife insured the car, equal use, with Admiral.
They are extremeley easy on mods over the phone and apply the same 'tickbox' levvies as they have on thier online quote page (so have a play on there first).

i did some odd combinations of mods on the RS, and if you pick with care, you can see the maths behind the database is flawed.
A +10% remap and exhaust gave about 15%bhp increase in the real world.
But it was cheaper to insure the two than just picking just the " +15% bhp remap" option for example, and by some margin.
It depends on the car and your knowledge of course, but its worth playing with the online quote engines

I would NOT fail to declare a remap to save just £100 a year or, in my case, about £40.
The reason being I know a Police Accident Investigator, who recently sent an ECU off to a specialist lab for anaysis following a big accident.
You may get away with it 'forever' but the one big 'off' may ruin you financially if your insurance company take you to the cleaners.
