The CPO deals on these are incredible! There must be a catch. I'm thinking of trading in the 335 on one of these beasts. What are the cons?

As a daily driver...you're spending a lot of money to fuel that V-10

Naturally aspirated, no manual transmission (its unlikely at least)...so not much fun wit the naturally aspirated engine...doesn't make much torque low

My guess is M cars are expensive to maintain. Someone who owns one should chime in.

Just to add, they're more expensive all around, more expensive repairs, insurance, fuel, maintenance. If you can afford it, go for it, they are beasts but just know the costs before going in on one, at least theres no HPFP!

We had an E60 M5 for 3 years.

If your using it as a DD you might have a few quirks.

The gearbox is very jerky in traffic, also he gearbox isn't the most reliable but its not common for it to give problems. Our diff gave out after 20k km's but i think that was more driver related(don't lug the engine), as TheRox said, fuel comsumption is quite heavy as well.

when you get it on an open road with M mode activated, it'll just keep the smiles coming!!! The sound, acceleration and handling is out of this world! Definitely a jem considering it will probably be the last N/A M5???

I have a 3 year old M6 and haven't had to put a dime into it yet, thanks to BMW's maintenance plan, and I havent' had to any warranty work done at all. I will tell you that I have had WAY more little things wrong with my 3 year old 328xi than my M6. The M6 hasn't had to go in for ANYTHING other than routine maintenance unlike my 328. Maybe when it's older it may be expensive, but what BMW isn't.

People always talk about the gas mileage being so bad, my car's computer says 20mpg at any given time combined city/highway, which is just fine with me. I say go for the M5 and don't look back!

You also ahve to consider your mileage on the M6 v. your 328

if your 328 is heavily driven...how can you compare it to a garage queen M6?

There's about 8K difference in mileage on the two, I've been having more fun with the M6 this year since we hardly had any rain this summer in NJ.

Yep. I considered a cpo e46 m3 before getting the 335is.

Thanks for all the comments, and thanks mods for moving it to the appropriate forum. In answer to some of the comments, yes, BMW CPOs M cars, I was actually looking on bmwusa.com. I need a sedan-have kids. I looked at e90 M3s, but a lot of them are $20k more (but also a lot less mileage).

My 2008 e90 has been relatively trouble free-only one HPFP fixed under warranty, but I also only have about 15K miles on the clock. Most of the M5s I have looked at seriously have high 20k-30k miles. Also I have usually stayed away from and advised others to stay away from buying a used "sports" car, as you never know how the previous owner drove and maintained the car. I think the M5 may be in a different class. I'm also tired of worrying about taking mods off and such when going to the dealer. I think that I may be able to leave an M5 "as is".

I haven't been able to find any problems with the e60s. Seems like I remember something about the previous gen M5 suffering engine failures at 50-70K. Looks like the CPO warranty is good to 100K, but I worry about the maintenance. Long ago when I was younger, my e46 325ci used to cost me about $1K every time it went in for service (needed front brakes every 10-12K).

gas mileage is the biggest "problem". right now my M6 is averaging 13.1mpg and still falling as I come out of break in and open it up more often. My coworker, who has an M5, gets around 12mpg. He drives his car pretty hard.

I don't consider anything under 50k miles as worth worrying about.

There's hardly ever any significant work before 80k, and usually nothing major before 150k - which is usually when you start to get 'groups' of things that need fixing.

Unless you plan on going to the dealer for all the minor maintenance along the way - in which case, get the lube.


Just think about all the old M's driving around with over 100k on the clock.
They're usually not operated by the richest people, and those folks can afford to daily them.
The key is to NOT pay 'more money than brains cash' for dealer work, when your typical mom n' pop shop can maintain your car for much less.

good advice, but there is a shortage of Mom and Pop shops in the semi rural area that I live in.
