Just because some company puts out a commercial about their product doesn't automatically make it true. If it did, every man in the world would be 6 feet, ripped, ridiculously good looking super humans driving around supercars and owning mansions with supermodel wives.

My cousin also has a 1993 S500 still like the first day he got it. Can't we just enjoy the commercial? Geez. |

But then again... my uncle has a 190E that he's had since delivery. The odometer broke at just over 410K miles back in '04. Running smooth since day 1 as he says.

I have both. Both have been reliable. My latest MB (2009 AMG E63) has been fine. And so has my E46 330i. Although I think the MB is built more strongly and with better materials (big price difference, tho.) But I know people who have terrible experiences with both brand. Some have had BMWs lemoned left and right, others with MBs.
But with both brands the electronics and millions of sensors in current models are iffy. In the end, the older cars were more robust (very few electronics.) My old 1972 BMW 2002tii and my Mercedes 1974 280C were both excellent with the Merc being the best in safety. But they were old and not ever 100% reliable because of their age and parts wearing out. MB has always promoted safety and longevity in their ads. Whereas BMW has focused on the driving characteristics and the sports sedan concept in their advertisements. |

My family has been driving mercedes for the last 15 years and almost every single one of them has crapped out or given us headaches. That is why I will never buy a MB. I've heard the older models in the 80's and early 90's were solid but the newer ones are just full of problems. |

They just don't make em like they used to. I have had similar stories. My 335 was a nightmare in retrospect. My uncles used their W124 and W126 E classes for 21 and 16 years respectively. After that one of them got a new W220 S430 and the car kept shudderring at high speeds. They could never fix it. He also had his wiper blade fly off when the car was 5 days old . He is relatively happy with his W221 S550 though. Hav'nt heard anything crazy with that car yet. Another uncles E280CDI cause him some grief too. AC conked out twice in 2 weeks and was charged $500 the first time and $2500 the second. Know of someone else who drove his X5 over some standing water on the road and the water got into the electricals on the underside of the car, and the car shut itself off 10 yards later. All I want is a good car without all this electronic BS that I can drive. Is that too much to ask for?

Mercedes have a reputation for reliability, but they aren't that reliable. They may be reliable in European standards, but definitely not when comparing to Japanese cars. You've also got to think about the mindset of the type of owners who purchase these cars and how much work/money they are willing to put in to the car to keep it going. I'm sure you could do the same type of commercials with F150s or Chevy trucks, but that doesn't mean they are the most reliable vehicles out there
