///M is not the same as ///M3 (get educated)
Is it ignorance that compels people to people bash on the M-badge on non M cars. its seems as though having an M badge on a NON M3, M5, etc car has been shunned upon amongst the general population on BMW forums. In short, BMW had Motorsport as their "tuner" line where it originally gave cars a sportier feel and look. Most of us fancy the mtech kits, performance parts, and packages available for NON m cars; if you can accept that, you should be able to understand the Motorsport badge is an iconic symbol and not a demeaning flaw for non-M autos. IMO, this would be the equivelent of TRD on toyotas or nismo or nissans.
"M-Cars vs. M-badged cars BMW release specific motorsport parts for non-M vehicles. Furthermore, vehicles which have been modified by BMW Motorsport but are not full M-Cars may feature plain ///M badges with no number, whilst full M-Cars have 'M' badges with the model number. E.g. 'M3' or 'M5'. It should be noted however that the Z3/Z4-based M Roadster and M Coupe bore numberless 'M' badges as standard fitment. For example, the E28 M535i featured suspension, styling, and transmission improvements over the standard 535i. These changes were carried out by BMW Motorsport, thus the car carried 'M' stripe badges on the front grille and boot, but not the full 'M5' badging. The E28 M5 was sold along side the M535i. Motorsport modifications have been made to almost every BMW model, hence it is not unusual to see 'standard' BMW's with 'M' badges." here's the video in case the embeddded one doesn't show up Last edited by mister wiggles; 11-02-2010 at 02:34 PM.. |

thats all fine but i still find it lame to stick the M on there. i saw a 320d today with nothing but mtech (ie he did not have the m sport at least) and he painted the freakin roof black and stuck an M bagde on there.
i have no problem at all making any e9x look like an m3 but why the badges ...

I agree with you to an extent...the only thing I have a problem with is when people actually buy the badge and slap it on the back of their car. I don't have a problem with people installing M parts with the M logo on it though (shift knob, steering wheel, key fob covers, etc)

One time i saw an e36 325is where the guy had taken off just the numbering and replaced it with an "M" badge, thus saying "///Mis" I'll never forget that one.
Oh and OP, I see the point your trying to make though the m roadster and m535i were nonetheless equipped with M badges from the factory. I would never put an M badge on my 330i, and furthermore i think sticking an m badge on one's 318 or 323, 325, 528i, etc is not ok. It screams tool IMO. just sayin. |

These two cars are very different.
Do you see any badges saying that one is faster or better than the other? Or maybe an "S" or "R" on the faster model? I don't understand why people are such badge whores. Do you buy the car for it's performance and styling or just because it has certain letters and numbers on the back? I guess a 335 with a tune should be changed to a 336 because it shows that it's better and people must know this. Anyway, if your car comes with that AMG or ///M badge, then ok, but I don't see a point in sticking letters and numbers to your car. Pretty tacky and childish unless you're trying to advertise or sell something.

I would never put an M on my car, in fact i hate being badged, I would take any badges off.
With that said, if someone buys an M badge and wants to feel good about putting an M on THEIR OWN car, why must we hate on them? What effect does someone making their car look stupid have on us? Maybe I'm missing something, I don't know. |

Similar to Audi with their S-Line Models.
When I had my B7 A4 Non-S-Line (2007), if someone on the forum placed their "S-Line" Badge on the rear of the car, they got RIPPED on. Thanks for typing that up, but the best point made is the fact that if you put it on yourself, you're a dingle. Example: Front: Notice the small S-Line badge on the grill. Rear: EDIT: Not my cars. |

Did the Op have a point of some kind?
I didn't understand a word of it. "THEN can the FULL M-cars we worship today." Say what? Do whatever you want to your car to make you feel warm and fuzzy...... nobody actually cares. |

Did OP get caught with an ///M badge stuck on his car or something?
Like Kolyan said, if it came with it on there, good. Otherwise, no. Also, M-tech parts are ok. |
