Falken HS-439 winter tyres
Has anyone tried these?
http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.p...110&sowigan=Wi They seem to be the only reasonably priced winter tyres for a staggered set up (ie 255 rear 225 front), I dont really want to go down the road of buying new wheels. Thanks |

They have never been at the top of their game as a winter tyre but they will be 10x better than the summer run flats you probably have on now. For where you live they should be 100% adequate.
As a compromise on not needing to buy new alloys; seems like a sensible decision all round. If they are anything like the wintracs i fitted recently they do take at least 200 miles of dry road driving to bed in. My wintracs were like ice driving when new. I gave them a real thrashing yesterday and they are gripping very very well now. Just be careful in the wet from new. |

what would be a good tyre in between the 439 (winter) and the 452 (summer)
only ones I can find are these 225 http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.p...10&sowigan=GAN and 255 http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.p...110&sowigan=CW |

I've got a set of 439s, no complaints. I've used them in snow in the Austrian alps with no issues, albeit not in what I'd describe as "severe" snow (worse than in the UK though). |

My thoughts are based upon 2 weeks i spent looking for credible winter tyre reviews specifically from countries that deal with this year in year out. |

Absolutely not basing it on the price. I know the falkens are highly regarded summer tyre.
In fact I looked at these to begin with for my own winters but ended up with the wintracs because at the time they were only slightly more per corner and apparently one of the best. Either those or nokian wr g2. Winter contact 830 if you have the cash. |

Beware the ones in the first link are only V rated which is why they are a bit cheaper. They'll feel slightly unstable at high speed and fall apart above 140.
My winters are also only V. No issue for normal driving, just be gentle with them on the motorway.

I've got these for Winter...
Should do the trick! I just accept that the BM will be utter cack in the snow and will leave if/when it snows. Luckily it's warmer down ere. |

It's fine in the snow with a good winter tyre. I really really enjoyed the winter once my winter tyres were on. Before that, couldn't even escape my carpark...
heh..

We have the rather alarming obstacle of a 1 in 3 drive ending in a sharp turn with a big house to hit if we get it wrong.
We were stranded (even with a Jimny) for three days last Winter! When I finally plucked up the courage to give it a go in the 4x4, I slid about 30 yards and almost crashed! Hoping the Landy tyres will ofter far more grip (the Jimny had road biased 4x4 tyres). I'm not sure any Winter tyres would cope on a BM unless they had spikes! |

Admittedly the driveway sounds daunting!

Mega - even with just leaves, it defeats most delivery vans!
Snowplough could be good. Going to stock up on sharp sand too. |
