Question 320d or 325i 2.5l?

Those of you with a choice, what would you rather have - a 320d, poorly specced (no leather, no xenons, no idrive) OR 325i with half leather, sport seats, 17in wheels, xenons, cruise control but no blootooth, year younger and half the miles (for about 2500 euros more).

How would the owners of both engine types compare them? IS the 325i bullcrap motor because it's not fast but thirsty as 330i? Diesel doesnt sound good but if chipped it'll whip the 325i easily.

Id take the 325i. Espescially if its the 3.0 engine. The 320d is a good car, and miles better than a 320i, but it cant compete with a 3.0 six petrol.

no, it's a 2007, so a 2.5l engine with 217 CO2 and 150NM torque, not 170NM as in 3L. Hence the puzzle. I would have not thought that much about the 3L one. But 2.5 im kinda thinking if it makes sense.

But the 325i does have the colour and options I want, as my current one (I calculated) just needs so much dollars to make it right that I figure what's the point, since this one is newer and with less miles.. just i had one experience driving 325i in past and for 218hp engine it felt slow as a pig! :S i guess im spoiled by diesel torque? I'll do another test drive soon before I give full verdict but interested to hear more.

the d will return better economy, and if remapped: will also be considerably quicker.

So it is purely a petrol vs diesel debate then. You happy enough with the combine harvester diesel? If so: It is the logical decision.

But if you want the petrol, get the petrol.

Personally though, I think will is spot on. If you are getting a practical car: The d is the best of both worlds. Economy and relatively quick. If you want a good fun petrol: Then 335i is the way to go. Not 325i

Yes it is. All I could insure at age 22. What's the excuse for your mid life crisis?

Anyway. The point I was trying to make, was the OP's choice of cars are between the two. So I'd suggest if you think both of his choices are shit: It'd be much more.. you know, decent. To not post up what you did?

320d mapped is faster than a 325i (even a 2.5l)???

I didn't realise that...though surely a 2.5l 6-pot will be smoother/more refined?

should be quicker in town, but lose out in top speed, top gears. The 320d remapped to 200hp will have more than double of torque of 325i. That will give you a nicer sprint. Top speed will be another story, 325i will go to around 240kph, while 320d is in stock around 220. but with chip im sure it'll be higher, btu i dont really care, we dont have autobahns.

The point about buying petrol only for fun is not that valid, I mean we dont have such crazy insurance laws and CO2 laws so by bying the 325i is really not like "I might as well get 335". They are hugely different in price, some 10k euros. 10k euro is fairly big diff.

I used to own a 2.5L 325i. I've also driven a 320d.

Excluding the higher fuel consumption of the 325i, the 325i is better. A lot better. The engine sounds a lot nicer and it is more fun. Power is from memory 160kW in the 325i vs 135kW in the 320d. That is a big difference.

The only reason I defend the 320d if buying "the best fun car for XX budget" is that once remapped, what has been said above by kaishang really isn't valid any more. The 320d will be significantly quicker than the 325i once mapped.

And FWIW I've had my 320d up to 148 on a private road near the M1. Mapped of course. Used to top out at 135 or so before. So top speed is the same as well.

Even remapped to the same power, one is still a 4-cylinder diesel and the other is a 6-cylinder petrol.
